I think you have a point in that we don’t want it to expand in the sense of getting too big.

But I also think it’s clearly obvious which you continue to fail to acknowledge, that it is extremely popular and fans throughly enjoy it.

If 104 thousand people watched the final which they did, that is a clear indication of the above, that can be disputed whether you like it or not??

I've acknowledged that over and over again, the fact the IPL is popular isn't really open for debate (your point that IPL fans enjoy it more than any other cricket fans anywhere is offensive though).

The point was, and always has been, that we have bent over backwards to accommodate the IPL to the detriment of all other cricket. And despite repeated warnings, cricket continues appeasing them and they keep taking more and more. Now we have nearly a quarter of the calendar year turned over to a franchise tournament, and there's no way they're stopping there. The game is eating the sport, it's been obvious for years.

We have a franchise in Durham today playing friendlies, it's not a co-incidence.

The first point is simply a observation, obviously you can’t read peoples minds how much they enjoying the game.

But after 40 odd years of either watching or playing cricket, the visible enjoyment and enthusiasm of cricket fans at a IPL , game after game is something to be pleased to see, ordinary cricket fans throughly enjoying the game of cricket.

And it is cricket highly skilled cricket at that!

It’s not offensive in the least to say IPL fans enjoy cricket as much as I have ever seen cricket fans enjoy it, it’s just a observation

The worlds best players playing and full grounds of fans throughly enjoying themselves is the complete opposite of killing the game for me.

Of course like I have said a thousand times I agree we have to get the balance right and hope it doesn’t get too big to the deriment of other cricket.

But it’s obvious it’s only getting big because cricket fans enjoy it!!

Sport is about giving entertainment and joy to its fans!!

Will obviously fans enjoy it massively which in turn makes a lot of money that’s how it works.

The hell of lot of money that it makes,it wouldn’t make if fans did not want it or enjoy it massively.

So it’s making a hell of a lot of money and giving fans what they want!!

The reasons that this expansion has been proposed is because of the extra money it will bring and the extra power it brings the BCCI over the cricketing calendar and the extra money that brings.

Yes, it having a large fanbase allows it to happen but let's not try and pretend it's one of the reasons it's happening.

If course the Indian fans love,cricket is their national game and there's a lot of them. Not so sure that there's any hard evidence that its popularity is worldwide.

Your point is weird to be honest. Just because something is popular with one set of fans doesn't mean that its a good thing that it expands to the detriment of all other fan groups of the sport.

Ben Stokes has retired from ODIs and is not playing in the ECB's flagship short format competition. This is awful for fans of England or the Hundred and its because of the ridiculous scheduled which is partly caused by the IPL's dominance.

He won't accept that. To @Voice of fair play , cricket isn't worth playing unless it's global superstars smacking bowling machine balls into the stratosphere

That’s not the point I am making, nobody wants it to expand to the detriment of other cricket.

However it’s ridiculous to say the IPL has killed the sport when it’s soo popular with fans of the sport!

The schedule is down the greed of different countries, not the IPL, it’s just another excuse to have a go at it!

It's popular with Indian fans. Do you have any stats of the popularity elsewhere in the world?

I haven't said it has "killed" the sport but it is a big factor in the schedule saturation which is causing issues throughout cricket. I already pointed out what has happened with Ben Stokes but there's loads of other examples. England having a test and ODI series going on at the same time was great for the game wasn't it?

I don't dispute that there are other factors and the ECB don't come out looking good when it comes to scheduling but you have blinkers on if you can't see that the huge issues a tournament that can pay the money to get any player it wants to play taking a quarter of the cricketing calendar will have awful consequences for every other competition.

I think the point of the thread was to state that the schedule has become too much, which he has and think we can all agree on that.

What should be happening is criticizing boards for that schedule, but once again it comes back to the IPL.

The current one day series where we finished one last Sunday and started another on the Tuesday was down the ECB and not the IPL.

There is room for the current IPL and then work around the rest of the years schedule and be sensible.

Especially the English calendar as international cricket was very rarely played that early in the year when the IPL was on.
The article at the top of the thread talks about top nations playing each other more and more, that’s more of the problem, not the IPL

I don't think anyone is solely blaming the IPL but it is a massive contributor to it.

There is no room for an expanded IPL and a healthy cricket environment in the other cricket playing nations IMO. There is no way a single national competition should have no much influence over the rest of the world game.

You were the one defending the expansion because you've seen Indian fans in the ground enjoying the matches.

I wasn’t defending a possible extension, I was defending somebody saying the current window is destroying the sport.
 
My personal feeling is that cricket boards as time has gone on have tried to cramp as much international cricket as possible to make as much money as possible and Stokes is dead right as is the top post

I think that would have happened anyway with or without the IPL.

And it’s a convenient factor to blame the IPL because posters on here don’t like it and I don’t think it’s anywhere near as much as a factor you make out

Like I say as long as it stays with the current window, I personally think it’s absolutely great that 104 thousand people turn up to watch a cricket final.

Like everything it’s a question of balance and having the worlds best cricket players getting together for a T20 competition is good imo as it giving cricket fans what they want!!
