Wisden nailing it

Outstanding article.

The first two paragraphs are just insane:

"England’s last two ODI series have managed to clash, not with other team’s cricket, but with their own. The ODI series against the Netherlands overlapped with their own Test series against New Zealand and their ODI series against India clashed with their own domestic finals day.

This winter, England will go to Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Bangladesh, with a T20 World Cup in there too. This schedule is not a wave about to break, but one that has already broken."

The England calendar is a disgrace. As a punter, I’ve never really moaned about it as I get to watch lots of international cricket.

But look at how many tests England have played since the start of 2020 compared to every other nation. That’s before you even start to bring in white ball games.

It comes at the detriment to the county game as well. Once your player makes it through to the England set up, not even a central contract, you kiss goodbye to seeing them more than once or twice at the start of the season for your county.

'Cricket has to learn that quality and value can lie in scarcity, otherwise the result will be, if it hasn’t happened already, that cricket loses what little meaning it carried anyway.'

That's the quote for me. As disappointing as it is for Stokes to retire from ODIs, at least he is giving The Hundred a miss. A tournament nobody asked for, but is given such a window to the detriment of everything else.

Noticeable that all the countries boards have a window for their 20/20 leagues apart from ECB who havent bothered

Interesting in his interview on sky Stokes side stepped the question of the players taking pay cuts if less cricket is played. The schedule does not altering but players need to be honest and realise that means pay cuts will have to follow. Not just for players obviously either. More than likely that loss in revenue will be passed onto supporters with ticket prices, merchandise prices going up

The ECB are not one for nuance or guile with pushing The Hundred as opposed to everything else (including test cricket), hence why every home summer will now include a minimum three-week window with no international cricket, and during the school holidays. You can see that the ECB have decided that The Hundred is the tournament that will bring in revenue, families, broadcast rights etc and it also helps that it spotlights Women's cricket etc.

The loser will be 50 over domestic cricket, which will then will impact the international team (young players not getting experience of how to pace an innings etc), and of course The Blast. The Blast is a brilliant tournament (bringing much needed revenue to the counties) was treated so appallingly at the end of the tournament with the scheduling against the India T20 series.

He did answer it though by saying if he can give 100% , he is happy with that. You had to read between the lines, how he answered that wage question

right I’m flouncing off, in case that is not what you want to read

11 week window for the IPL, where all other cricket is shut down. Isn't it a shame that nobody predicted that the IPL would continue to expand until it had eaten the sport?
There would not be a 11 week window if it wasn’t incredibly popular and successful??

Shocked to see you defending it like.

It won't be on for more than a month.....
It won't affect international.games.....
Players won't miss international games.....
It won't impact on rhe English domestic season....

And all the other things that absolutely wouldn't happen.

The game that killed the sport.

Cmon. I know you love pyjama bish bash bosh, but surely even you can see it's bad for the global game when one tournament demands a quarter of the global calendar. Surely?
I think we need to be realistic mate and accept its here to stay because it’s incredibly popular.

You know that mate in fact everybody knows whether they like it or not

What should happen is to find a way to get the balance right while accepting the IPL.

Maybe all countries work together to make sure that window works for as many countries as possible

Instead all you get is people on here slagging it off.

They can slag it off as much as they like but it’s the most poplar domestic cricket tournament by a country mile and that’s not going to change soon.

I am pretty sure a lot of fans and players worldwide don’t see it like that.

In fact the fans, players and the whole culture at IPL games seem to be enjoying the game as much, if not more than any other cricket games on earth.

Pretty sure they don’t seem to think it has killed the sport, in fact I am pretty sure they are absolutely loving the sport.

You might not like it mate, but it’s incredibly successful and popular that’s fact.
Can’t remember seeing fans enjoying a game of cricket as much as I see fans do at the IPL.

Fans enjoying the game is good not bad?

Not surprised to see you ignoring the point.

Have they promised to stop at 10 teams over 11 weeks? No way they'll expand further, they definitely won't. I bet they mean it this time too. No chance they'll go back on their promises again!

And if you seriously believe that no-one enjoys cricket as much as IPL fans, then there really isn't any point talking to you.

What do you seriously expect to happen??

For it to my scrapped when like I say it’s clearly the most successful domestic cricket competition ever!!

As for fans enjoying it, you see them loving it every single game.

Player after player comes back from it and raves about the experience.

Of course the powers of be need to work together to make sure it fits best in the calendar, that’s obvious.

But constantly slagging something off that clear gives everybody involved joy and entertainment and is highly loved by all involved will achieve nowt!
I think you know as well as I do the cramped calendar is more down to the greed of countries organization bodies, rather than the IPL.

I expect it to be expanded again at the next available opportunity, maybe even an IPL winter league somewhere where there's sun in September. UAE perhaps?

I expect false shots for six to be proclaimed as OH MY WORD THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! by stupid commentators playing up to the script. I expect the 16.4 to be pushed in an attempt to compete, and I expect that no amount of money is too much to ensure it wins. And I expect domestic cricket and test cricket to be marginalised and the game to be dumbed down.

And I think your comment about IPL fans enjoying cricket more than anyone else is vomit inducing, frankly. But we've been over and over this, you prefer short form, I prefer cricket. I have no doubt you will win eventually.

But if you want me to shut up about it, tough shit.

It’s not about me and you though is it?

It’s about cricket fans worldwide and whether you like it or not the short form is very popular and the IPL the most poplar of all.

I could be wrong about this but it also seems to get the ordinary cricket fan into the ground, rather than some posh club the MCC charging £130 pound for a average seat for just one days test cricket!!!

I must have said this a thousand times, cricket fans always have and always will in the majority prefer to see big shots.

That’s why the likes of your Sobers, Bothams were poplar well before a shorter format was even thought off and why even local clubs got bigger attendances when overseas pros came to their grounds to again see big shots.

It stood to reason and all rationale that the shorter format would be poplar!!

It’s about getting the balance right between the shorter format and the longer format.

The skills taken and enhanced from the shorter format and have undoubtedly helped in the last 4 test matches chases so maybe shorter format could actually enhance and make test match cricket more entertaining?

It certainly has the last couple of months !!

Who said it was about you and me? I said there's no point discussing it again, and you've responded by trotting out the same tropes as if to reinforce my point!
