Women’s Euros 2022

haha is that the new Tory or Labour slogan?

Between them they've already screwed the country during my lifetime (i'm 49) so I left the country and f***ing glad I did. To bring it closer to home.

How did SD and his mate acquire SAFC despite 'passing' a 'fit and proper' owners test? Using the clubs own money to pay for it! In 2020....still mad as hell about that I doubt we are the only club to suffer from such EFL bullshit.
The owner and director case only looks at involvement in corporate or personal insolvencies, with football insolvency treated more harshly, or breaches of a limited range of criminal offences. Simple as that. Meet those criteria and you pass.

Distasteful as it was, Donald and Methven did nothing in the running of the club that was illegal or broke EFL rules.

Watched England last night and enjoyed the match. The commentators were awful and were droning on about how the achievement was better than any men’s or women’s teams. No need to compare with men.

White has scored a lot of goals and deserves credit for that. However, male internationals do not get to play in as many one sided games where every forward has a boat load of chances.

Personally, I will keep watching the England games but am not interested in the rest. That said, I am not interested in club matches beyond watching the lads.

Spoken like someone that didn't watch international qualifiers up until the mid 90s (possibly even beyond). Most teams were fodder up until then.

There are people comparing it to the men's game and people say stop doing it. Then the same people that are making the comparison are annoyed when the achievements are compared.

50+ goals at international level is an amazing achievement. Why should someone's achievement be belittled?

Ronaldo has 117 international goals so still some way to go.

Is it a good thing to promote a sport to a level it doesn’t yet warrant? Yes because it’s got the potential to positively influence millions of young girls and encourage their participation in sport both playing and supporting. No other sport has the potential or the reach to do this.
Is it public service broadcasting? I think it is
This is exactly the point ^^^

The BBC charter clearly sets out:

"It should offer a range and depth of analysis and content not widely available from other United Kingdom news providers"

"The BBC should help everyone learn about different subjects in ways they will find accessible, engaging, inspiring and challenging."

"...raise awareness of the different cultures and alternative viewpoints that make up its society"

Televising the Women's Euros fits into the BBC's mission quite nicely.

There are times when big wins feel special. Scoring 5 away to Germany or 4 against Holland in Euros 96.

An 8-0 against a country with a population about the size of Sunderland doesn’t get the pulse racing.

I think the population of Turkey is slightly bigger than that tbf.

It is not about the population size though. They are ranked 12th in the world. England played amazing yesterday. If the men's team had put in a performance like that against Croatia or Denmark we wouldn't be mentioning the size of the population and trying to make excuses.

Last night England beat one of the best teams in the world 8-0. Norway are among the favorites to win it.

Norway had won the Euros twice previously I believe. They were totally outplayed by England.
Ha'way the Lasses.
This might not go down too well but why are the BBC pushing this sport down our throats on their main channel?
Unbelievable the coverage for this minority sport.

They show the Winter Olympics too. If you're looking for minority sport, that's where you'll find it.

Anyone else reckon women’s football should have smaller goals to compensate for the lack of height of keepers? If a 6 ft 6 male keeper can get beaten at the far post then what chance does a 5 foot 10 woman with a far lesser reach?

Admittedly I haven’t been a dedicated watcher of women’s football to know this is a particular problem but high scoring games seems to suggest either the good teams are amazing or the poor teams are extremely poor defensively or have poor keepers.

Norway allegedly had 2 of the best strikers in the world playing yesterday yet were losing 6-0 at half time.

There’s no shame in having a small pool of countries that are competitive. I’m pretty sure rugby and cricket only has about 12 countries that can seriously compete.
If you look at historical records, the height and weight of the women is more or less the same as that as Victorian men. You could argue that the women are playing the game as originally intended, and that, in fact, the goals should be bigger in the men's game, given the increase in male height and weight since the 1870s.

When did the Ryder Cup become some major British essential thing we had to angst over as a nation? That seems a recent thing or have I got that wrong?
Like most things that appear on Sky, they are then funnelled through the Murdoch print empire and the consumer then cares about something they never previously cared about. Well that is one view, personally as a sports lover I like the option of watching The Lions etc when I have never previously had the opportunity to do so.

Ultimately though, it is the Murdoch thing. They wouldn’t make back their investment for sports lovers alone.

If England men beat Norway men 8-0 at a Euros, you wouldn't be buzzing?
