To all the Mags saying that Ashley was shit & defending the Saudis owning their club, an ownership that 120k signed a petition to make happen, this is what your owners do. You should be f***ing ashamed of yourselves.

I'd be more ashamed as a grown man following 14, 15 and 16 year olds on Twitter.

? He bought us in May 07.
06/07 we got into the UEFA Cup via Intertoto
05/06 we were in the Intertoto SF
04/05 we got to the QF of the UEFA Cup
03/04 we dropped into the UEFA Cup (got to the SF) from the Champions League

So, other than 05/06 we were in the UEFA Cup. 3 Seasons before his takeover (03/04) we were in the Champions League.

06/07 you failed to qualify for Europe. If you had qualified you wouldn't have entered the intertoto two Bob Cup

05/06 you didn't qualify

00/01 you didn't qualify

01/02 you didn't qualify

Have sunderland qualified for Europe then? We finished 7th and were eligible for the intertoto Cup?

No we didn't as European qualification is where you enter the competition with no other pre requisites. You entered Europe via the back door not through your ambition or League performance

Was a ridiculous decision not entering that year in hindsight. This argument that the Intertoto intefered with pre-season preparations was daft considering what's better than playing competitive games (usually against inferior opposition) to prepare you for a competitive season?

Not sure I agree.

Teams who entered tended to do shit in the league the following season

That's not true.

European qualification is qualifying for European competition, whatever the route is. We didn't cheat or circumvent the rules to get into the competition, we qualified.

Well it's not is it.

Bradford entered the intertoto by a raffle.

Qualifying for Europe is placing in a league or Cup. Not by a back door

Or are you arguing 17th deserves European football 🤣

I'm not arguing that 17th 'deserves' European competition. Like, does 5th 'deserve' promotion ahead off 3rd ;)? I'm saying we qualified. You, in your infinite wisdom might decree that despite abiding by the qualification rules we didn't 'qualify', but you'd be wrong and look silly saying it.

This bit I put in bold is important. Brighton, Palace both have ambitions for more; they want to be the best versions of themselves they can achieve. This means they try and build sustainable growth. They employ shrewd football men to run their club with joined up thinking. When Brighton hired a director to oversee short, mid and long-term strategy they found an excellent candidate and trusted him. Ashley gave the job to; Dennis Wise, Joe Kinnear, Bob Moncur and then binned them off sharpish when they didn't dance to his tune.

Had Ashley invested in the facilities, the academy, the stadium, the scouting network, the coaching staff and signed off on a transfer strategy that prioritised football over resale value, then no, Newcastle fans wouldn't have been so vehemently opposed to him. But, he didn't do any of that.
Carr was lauded as one of the biggest geniuses in British football for a few years when you were signing the like of Cabaye and Ben Arfa. You were all dressed-up in French gear for a game man.

I actually agree with most of this. Ashley might have ran the club sustainably but he neglected the clubs facilities and used it as a cheap advertising tool for his sports tat. He did take on a financial burden when he first took the club over and didn’t seem to do much to increase revenue streams.

The real world wasn’t the Hall and Shepherd days though - spending money you haven’t got to keep up with clubs who have higher revenue streams. There’s a happy medium - whether Newcastle fans would accept that happy medium is a different question.

5th does deserve promotion if they win the playoff system and qualified via the playoffs.

The playoffs were introduced and stayed ever since.

I don't think a tournament where 19th place have entered is qualification and Uefa obviously agreed as they scrapped the format very early.

It's a raffle. If league position is irrelevant it's not qualification
