it is not unrelated...defoe wasnt playing for free you know...and o brien would have scored more than him.
safcwere made mugs of by defoe...
To be fair you could argue we let O'Brien go, replaced him with nobody, then went on our best run of form all season culminating in promotion. Something we didn't achieve with him in the squad.

Not that simple of course but it's about as one dimensional an argument as saying O'Brien would have been a better option than Defoe.

we effectivelt did replace o brien with no body and got very lucky indeed...if stewart had been injured at certain times we would have been in deep trouble..and while obrien would have been a very average stand in..he would have been much better than defoe...of cpurse o brien would have been a better option than defoe..he was fit to play and could last untiol seasons end..

If buts and maybes innit. All irrelevant now. The truth is he didn't matter.

Well that will seal donnys relegation
No need for that. 0N has been very effective in our games. He has seldom played "in my preferred style", but my style is not the only one and his and other styles are often better. It depends upon the opposition and the game.

0N has been a valuable driver in many of our games. We needed him and that need may still be required.

During the killer Leeds years (which I hated) they scored few goals but won many games. Not the 0N style, he is too flexible and decent for that but his style has won us many games too.

Without the ability of time travel , the deal to bring Defoe in and offload O’Brien was eminently the right one

the fans loved Defoe, they thought he would score around ten goals and help safc back into the championship

the fact it was proven to be the wrong deal, was impossible to know on signing him

keeping O’Brien may have cost safc getting into the championship as his finishing was not good enough

trying to turn that against the ownership is pretty poor but you appear to want to do that regularly
Exactly my thoughts. With O'Brien we knew he wasn't going to contribute - often he was a waste of a shirt - with Defoe there was a chance and you could see the merit. I still don't get why Defoe walked away as he was just starting to gain fitness and contribute.

There is a story why Defoe left, don’t know if anyone else knows the “rumour” but more than meets the eye shall we say

O’Brien arriving at Pompey “I’m pleased to be here and show what I’m about”.
Mustn’t of shown much Adain.

Why did O'Brien agree to leave us only to sign a six month deal? Surely he was earning more here?
We may have topped him up too. In fairness he seemed keen to play and worked hard but was limited. He’ll do a job for Shrewsbury.
