O’Brien had one game of glory v Blackpool away in the league cup. On arriving at portsmouth , he was not very appreciative of his time at safc and he was praising portsmouth highly to obviously get them on his side

now he’s jumped off to shrewsbury. I suppose he will do the same thing again.

He was not good enough

@kildaremackem having an absolute mare on this thread. I usually don’t mind him but he’s way off the mark here. O’Brien was shit for us. He flattered to deceive and I did defend him Whilst he was here as he could play football, however in the main he had absolutely no say in games and is not a player who is going to help you get promoted.

Lower league one is probably his level
i dont dispute lower league one is probably his level now..though worth saying he has been promoted from league one in the past..my point was really to compare the contribution he is capable if with that of defoe..as we shipped him out to bring defoe in..there i no question of wanting o brien in the championship like

Defoe is about 75 years old mate. Why compare the two, he wasn’t fit when he came here and his heart wasn’t in it. I don’t think O’Brien would have contributed much more in the games Defoe played anyway to be fair as he contributed nearly fuck all anyway

Without the ability of time travel , the deal to bring Defoe in and offload O’Brien was eminently the right one

the fans loved Defoe, they thought he would score around ten goals and help safc back into the championship

the fact it was proven to be the wrong deal, was impossible to know on signing him

keeping O’Brien may have cost safc getting into the championship as his finishing was not good enough

trying to turn that against the ownership is pretty poor but you appear to want to do that regularly

while we cant be certain of course..the extreme balance of probabilities was always that defoe was too old, or too unfit having not actually played football for ages..whereas o brien, for his many limitations..was at least available to play...there is no universe where swopping a player unable to play due to no match fitness is a better deal than retaining a player with match fitness

Don’t agree. Fitness would have been discussed.

if it was discussed they asked the wrong questions or their fabled data let them down..because its publ;cially availble info that defoe hadnt played a league match for months...and publically available that o bien had played recently..
they decided tp get defoe to feel big time and placate a section of the fans..they got lucky this time that stewrat didnt get injured..if they run it that stupidly in future..luck wont always be on their side

Wrong again. You have an agenda. By the way another one we disagreed on was the plan to sign young players from higher ranked teams.

you disagreed then but we have now signed the 10th player to fit that demographic in Ballard

try harder

how are you defining young? i would never have had a lsigning someone like ballard who is 23 this year and has 15 full international caps and over 50 league appearance? ar eyou seriously bunging in the same bracket as a calum doyle or a denis cirkin?

Why are you so obviously bloody stupid.

define young anyone up to the age of 28.

are you saying that Ballard is not young at 22 years old?

why am I bothering with you?

im not defining yoiung..you are..ballard is experienced compared to doyle...i like signing people as experienced as balalrd but think its stupid signing people as inexperienced as doyle...

Any signing is essentially a gamble. There are not many who didn’t think Defoe was a gamble worth taking, just as there was never a clamber fro O’Brien to stay. Grigg was another one that didn’t come off, in fact football is littered with them.

Then that makes you bloody stupid. Ballard is 22. That is an age where every single person in the world bar yourself would consider young

good job you are absolutely nowhere near being responsible of buying players though with your skills and knowledge , I wish you would join newcastle

im no longer bothering to reply to you

o'brien's contract was up in a few months. we got a small fee and got his ridiculous wages off the books. he was no use to us. you could see from the moment he missed that one on one on his debut how his time here was going to go

JD was a roll of the dice, granted it didn't work out. Given the choice of taking the chance on Defoe or sticking with AOB I'd have gambled with Defoe each and every time, given the pedigree and longevity of his career coupled with what he achieved at the club in his first spell. In comparison Aiden O'Brien is an absolute also-ran.

Absolute shite player. His half arsed closing down with that stupid cowardly jump he used to do used to grind on me. Seen better strikers in none league
