To be fair, prior to Shearer's arrival we were also a top six club (very briefly) when Cole and Ferdinand were on the books.
Ferdinand was also one of the leagues best strikers. You were also funded by John Hall. Pretty much the equavalent of having man city money in those days. That's when you accumulated your fan base. Shearer carried you for seasons, others were bought by big money owners. Once he retired you dropped to an average side (as you were for years prior to the 90's) and eventually a side involved in relegation battles.

So what you are saying is newcastle were only a top 6 side because they had good players?

thanks for that

Definitely. Historically speaking, we've always been a lower achieving club. Too many of our fans see the 90's as the benchmark when, in reality, the statistics show that that period of time was actually an anomaly.

Using the same approach as used in the Athletic article the signings of Ferdinand, Batty, Barton and Ginola would cost 107m, 58m, 51m and 32m in today's terms. That is c250m which would make them the top spenders in world football presently.

They therefore became a top 6 side by outspending everyone else. It failed of course and led to zero trophies.

Waved it in kids faces? Something wrong with you like.
I wasn't aware of it. Likely because Sunderland fans don't go on and and one about the actions of a single fan unlike the mags and the non-seat shitting incident.
