Wear-Tees Derby

When l first started supporting Sunderland (early 60’s) if all three teams were in the same division there was a “Cock of the North” trophy awarded to whichever team won the most points in the games between each other. There was also a magazine at the time, name escapes me, but it featured all three teams plus Darlo and Hartlepool…basically just covered north east football.
The magazine was Shoot if im not wrong same as the tv footy prog.
I dont recall the actual trophy for " Cock of the North " thought was just a name only thing.

It is a derby.
It will be a higher attendance than other games.
The atmosphere will be vastly different.
The last two statement are absolute facts, therefore it cannot be regarded as the same as all other league games.

It’s in between for me. The atmosphere will be better and there’ll be a bigger attendance, but the same could be said for Coventry, Portsmouth, games over the last few years too. It isn’t at anywhere near the same level as the mags, but it’s definitely more exciting than playing Cardiff at home, for example.

It’s always held more significance to me than a normal game - mainly due to getting endless grief off the bastards at school back in the 80’s/90’s. Twats.

Don't agree marra.

We never get anywhere near our biggest attendance of the season against the Boro, and it's the best evidence that most of our fans are simply not fussed by it.

Last 10 times we've met in the league;

2017/18 - 6th highest crowd of the season. (Championship)
2016/17 - 4th
2008/09 - 12th
2007/08 - 7th
2005/06 - 13th
2002/03 - 5th
2001/02 - 18th
2000/01 - 6th
1999/00 - 4th
1997/98 - 12th (Championship)

Meh, just another game. A game against the mags I look at weeks in advance and it is easy to ignore the game or two before. The result affects me for ages aftwards.

Final whistle goes, right who is next?, oh Boro, ok. Out of mind until the following Saturday. The result will affect me like any other result. If we get beat it will be disappointing, but it will not hurt.

Its derby it just SAFC fan snobbery by some fans that say otherwise. A few miles down the road, areas where fans support both. It's nowhere near as intensive as the wear/Tyne derby but its a derby all the same. Chelsea v Brentford/QPR/Fulham are derbys even though Chelsea will be more passionate about other London games such as Spurs / West Ham.
