Cost of food items rocketing

I’m a long way from my Business degree that I played golf throughout but I thought that any business would not have their main supplier accounting for maximum 50% of their turnover? I can’t get my head around one country falling over and the who world is cream crackered.

Same for oil, petrol going through the roof and the only person feeling the pinch is the punter filling his car to drive to the supermarket to get his overpriced pasta while the money they have got to pay for it has not risen one iota.

It’s a disgrace.

I've noticed a 20% or so increase on average over the typical food items I eat every week. It's absolutely insane... Luckily I'm only buying for myself but if I was buying for a family of 4 on just my income I would definitely struggle more than I am atm.

I only shop at ASDA as well which is generally known as the cheapest main supermarket. How do ALDI and LIDL fare in terms of cost comparisons with asda? Live within 5 minutes walking distance of both so u may start going there instead if there's money to be saved.

The butter snobs on here will know that their favourite spread - Lurpak - has shot up in price to well over £4 for a 500g tub.
It was £4.49 in Morrisons the other day.

The Aldi version is £2.09 for the same 500g tub.

I shall be buying the cheapest. I can't tell the difference to be honest.
Nearly nailed on odds of it coming from the same processing plant as Murpak, Turpak, Aldipak etc.

How does not having debt stop prices going up caused by the Ukraine invasion? These price rises aren't just in this country.
It doesn't stop inflation but it makes it worse. You mentioned Ukraine and covid which are two big factors causing huge inflation. However you didn't mention our record debt pre covid which is another (smaller) factor.
The weak pound is another negative.

I’ve started using Lidl for most shopping except crisps and cereal. Still go to butchers for some decent meat for weekends but for midweek Lidl is fine.

Regardless, a lot of it is wasted and a lot is put to good use.

What Would you suggest, the gov spend less and make more cuts, or spend more raising the debt?

It is causing worldwide massive trouble and increases. Some can’t seem to accept it though for whatever reason.
Savage cuts to public spending to cut down national debt was tried in the 2010s.
How did that go again?

The reason is pretty obvious. They don't like or want the current government. So regardless of cause the government gets the blame. I'd love to see a change of government and I'm looking forward to the next GE. But regardless of that I'm not going to blame this lot for something they can't really control. They should reduce tax on fuel, green levies need to go. There should be no tax of any kind on domestic fuels like gas and electricity. Heating a home is essential in the UK it shouldn't be taxed. You can criticise the government for not acting on that but they aren't to blame for a lot of the price rises. I think a good chunk of the increases are just pure profiteering from businesses taking advantage of the current situation. It will end in many going to the wall as people stop spending. Prices are just stupid now.

Things like spring onions have shot up 25%.

Things that used to be £1.20/ 2 for £2... are now regularly £1.80 each. Massive increases.

Must be loads of people who can't afford all these rises.

Correct. It doesent matter who is in power the debt will continue to rise. Hopefully Labour get in next time and we can see what they have to offer.

Yes that’s what will happen, people will stop spending as they simply won’t be able to.

Shite, but as I say what would you suggest, spend more or less? As you say it’s the debt causing issues here.
We agree Tories cutting public spending doesn't work. UK debt went from
76% of GDP in 2010 to 84% in 2019.
Germany's in 2010 was 82%, in 2019, it was 59%.

I acknowledged covid and Ukraine were the main drivers of inflation. Do you acknowledge that our record pre covid debt is a smaller factor?
Along with the weak pound.

Yes I do, they’re useless tbf. As i say long overdue a shake up.

The Tories handling of the economy was shambolic pre covid.
If only we had the debt we had in 2010.
