Boycott Qatar

Qa
All a farce really. England team keep taking the knee and Southgate constantly talks about it... Yet they're happily chasing the £££, and off to showcase Qatar.... Hypocrites
Our government is actively courting Qatar. Amir of Qatar was at Downing Street in May. Wouldn't have been there under Corbyn.

I just wish it was here already, I can’t wait it is going to be an amazing World Cup. Teams like Brazil, France and Belgium are going to light up this competition, but worried about England now but what an absolutely amazing build up to Christmas.

There's one in every crowd

Watching it on tele won't contribute to the viewing figures, thats not how they calculate them. They get about 5000 people who agree to have their viewing monitored and they extrapolate it. So if you're one of the 5,000 then not watching will have a large effect as it would take about 12,000 off the viewing figures. If you aren't then your watching it won't increase the figures at all. So I'll be watching on BBC and itv and not buying any merchandise

Do you think you’re absolving yourself from blame here? Advertisers pay loads of money for viewers’ attention. By watching, you’re facilitating are you not?

I find myself with a similar view to you but can’t help but think the actual moral position is to not watch at all without compromise. As soon as you start watching a bit, or for free, or whatever are we not fuelling the system?

Well, if I don't watch it won't add a single viewing figure to the total, and the advertisers have already paid and would advertise during a world cup regardless. I'm not giving them any money for merchandise or owt. So basically my opinion is that if I don't watch it has literally no effect on anything. The only thing I'm doing is missing out on watching a world cup. It seems like a very pointless "protest". I do think it's a disgrace that they've got the tournament mind, there should have been proper organised protests, nations should have contemplated pulling out. But now we're here and it's happening, my personal moral compass is saying don't buy any Qatar World Cup merchandise, don't travel there for it, but stick it on the tele. Appreciate others will feel stronger about it mind (although you'll also get a lot virtue signaling about how they'll boycott it and then they'll watch regardless), but that's where I'm at on it and I don't feel like it's a morally bad position tbh

Yeah I’m roughly the same but it’s exactly how I treat all world cups. I never travel to them & never buy merchandise. So I’m treating this tournament just the same. To lower my engagement would have to mean not watching live matches. Perhaps highlights.

While us watching or not watching doesn’t impact the marketing and sponsorship agreements, I can’t shake this thought that they are paying for my attention and by giving it, I’m playing the game.

Not judging you, as we seem to be in a similar place over it, but I do have some nagging thoughts about my position

Good to see in this country that more sports personalities are brave enough to admit being gay, yet the next World Cup is being played in a country where you could be executed for being gay. Anyone supporting this World Cup should be ashamed of themselves.

I think it is a bit sad to live in a country where you have to admit to being gay. It is none of anyone else's business. You don't have to admit to being heterosexual!!

If you normally buy merchandise and/or travel to world cups then that's fair enough really. I don't so me not doing it this year wouldn't be any different. I'm not watching it. I know it won't effect anything and the only person missing out is me but still
