So here we have the 68-69 league table. I get why Everton didn't get to play in the Fairs Cup (Even though they finished 13 points ahead of the mags) but not sure on Arsenal and why Chelsea went in ahead of them? I guess Arsenal and also Southampton declined the opportunity? This is why FIFA didn't recognise it (or was it UEFA) as it was not based on sporting merit.

Either way for a big club it is 24,511 days since the 55 FA cup win, 19362 days for the 69 Fairs Cup win.....not really in a position to gloat as 17,938 days since our 73 win (unless you are having the pizza cup win)!

I love using the Datedif function in Excel sessions - wonder if the next time I deliver it in the ME any of the Saudi's will say they support the mags!

En route:

Feijenoord - 2nd in Dutch league to qualify;
Sporting - 2nd in Portuguese league
Real Zaragoza - 5th in Spanish League
Setubal - 5th in Portuguese League
Rangers - 2nd in Scottish league
Ujpest - 2nd in Hungarian league

Leeds United (C) 67 - European Cup
Liverpool 61 - Fairs Cup
Everton 57
Arsenal 56
Chelsea 50 - Fair Cup
Tottenham Hotspur 45
Southampton 45
West Ham United 44
Newcastle United 44 - Fairs Cup
West Bromwich Albion 43
Manchester United 42
Ipswich Town 41
Manchester City 40 - ECWC
Burnley 39
Sheffield Wednesday 36
Wolverhampton Wanderers 35
Sunderland 34
Nottingham Forest 33
Stoke City 33
Coventry City 31
Leicester City 30

This just illustrates it had all the gravitas of a pre-season invitational.

Everton? - No Liverpool in already.
Arsenal? - no thanks, we'll pass.
Spurs? - No Chelsea in already.
Southampton? - not eligible - not held a European trade fair
West ham? - No Chelsea already in.

Had any of West Brom, Ipswich, Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Stoke or Leicester finished ahead of the Mags they would also have been passed over as ineligible based on their lack of qualifying trade fair.

Good knowledge- thanks buddy.

What?
We did. That has already been clearly demonstrated. We met the qualification criteria thus we qualified.

The main criteria was having had a European Trade Fair in the city and that knocked out half the league, then there is the one city one club entry rules which favours you somewhat - it might as well been a pan-european tournament for non actual european tournament clubs, that had tram systems and started with the letters D, A, F or T only.

I really have just laughed out loud. A jarrow mag has written in French on a post by Hugo. You lads!

Instead of deflecting try and answer the question - why did Arsenal not take part?
What happened to my reply? FIFA consider it a major honour, whatever the merits of qualification. UEFA merely don’t recognise it because it was FIFA who headed the committee and they weren’t involved. When they took responsibility for that competition slot they put their name on it quite literally. I have a recollection that the London teams used to draw for the right to play but need to check why I think that.

My under 5’s recently won a tournament. There was a better one on the same day where the other good teams went but that doesn’t matter we were eligible and battered everyone. Some kids could barely kick the ball but didn’t matter. To make it even sweeter one of the oppo coaches had a Bruno tattoo on his leg and his kid, Shearer, missed an open goal.

Not sure how to do white text…:

Done to death Keith however.... We gained entry because the rules allowed it. We did not write the rules.
UEFA Cup was based upon the rules of entry specific to that competition.
We also, much later, gained entry to the Champions League without being Champions. Had we won that i assume it would have been discounted on this basis?
This is the same mantra you spanners are now using for being owned by a henious regime. Just wrong on any level.

Evidence? Would it be the oft-repeated link to a fanzine type famous clubs list hosted on a FIFA website for a while but put together by a third party that included all first class trophies for Barcelona and AS Roma and included the ICF and no longer exists? Hope you have something more directly linked to FIFA than that, ideally that actually exists?

For reference, gravy-stained edits to Wikipedia don't actually make things into facts, five clubs drawing straws for entry to an invitational doesn't enhance the shininess of the 'cup', UEFA IS the official body of European Football, and a competition officially designed to "Promote International Trade Fairs" and where semi-finalists just don't bother turning up has about as much standing as the Isle of Man Trophy.
Sounds the same as Sunderland when they lifted the invitational Isle of Man Trophy 2 years running. We were invited. We entered. We won.

Still a meaningless trophy though as it wasn’t open to everyone.

This! except all the semi-finalists both years turned up.

All noted and not argued. Regardless of how favourable the entry criteria was did we meet it therefore qualify?
;)

You will not see me arguing against that point. Nor will you see me belittle your IoMT wins sir. A win is a win.

I’m pretty sure it carried a copyright FIFA and was embedded into their site with direct links to players, tournaments and awards. Hosted on FIFA.com isn’t merely a FIFA website, it is the FIFA website. Written by a third party? Often the case for large organisations. As for wiki there was a dispute between Spanish fans over who has the most honours, heavy editing didn’t involve NUFC, but lovely of you to think of us.

Newcastle doesn't have trams. Or start with D A F or T.

And they'd have screamed "Corruption" for the very reason they weren't invited

At least its a trophy and not a certificate with pre drilled holes..

Wikipedia appears to have missed the Fairs Cup major honours that were on FIFA.com for Valencia, Arsenal and Ferencvaros. Would one of you add that in please, I wouldn’t want anyone to think I had polluted it.

PRECIOUS memorabilia belonging to Fairs Cup favourite Benny Arentoft failed to sell at auction.

Toon hero Benny, who scored one of Newcastle United’s goals in the win over Hungarian giants Ujpest Dosza in the 1969 Inter Cities Fairs Cup final, made the sad decision to sell his European memories to cover crippling taxes in his native Denmark.

But only three of the 10 lots sold at the sporting memorabilia auction held at Lords Cricket Ground in London on Saturday.
