I'm not really sure that this is the right thing as he could have been used as a bargaining chip for the Ukrainians that have been deported to Russia, they may have been better delaying the sentencing. Although I am no legal or negotiation expert, I do hope it isn't a game of brinkmanship which leads to Russia responding with a tit-fot-tat escalation and putting Ukrainians in gulags.
