The carton magpie goes a lot farther back than that. Back in the 50's, some of my relatives would go to Roker one week, St James the next, so I ended up being given a pile of programmes from both (along with some Arsenal programmes from the same era). The Newcastle programme always had the cartoon magpie on the front cover.
