C.C:: Sussex v Durham (Hove)

Bancroft/Young
The others I would have attempted to mitigate with loan signings

And where they can be predicted you need to mitigate them.

I am a big advocate of giving promising youngsters a chance but the kids in line in the batting department, after Jones, are like 18 and 19.
You said you wouldn't have brought Bancroft back.

Not so sure it is hindsight, though. Coughlin can never be relied upon given his fitness record and Carse was on England's radar in the winter so there was always the danger we'd lose him. Given Rushy's age we should have had contigency plans for a replacement so I think there has been a lack of foresight. Really worrying thing is that the academy bowling conveyor belt appears to have dried up. Gibson looks miles off 1st team standard, Cambell appears to have disappeared off the radar completely. Mitch Killeen looks promising but a long way from senior level. At times like this the leaders have to show up. Unfortunately both Borthwick and Franklin are completely devoid of leadership qualities.
Like others I feel the problem is with management not the players. Look at the atmosphere of the squad for the RLC. Then someone came back changed things for the final and it backfired. Same this season, first game Durham on top and the weather intervened. As soon as things went wrong on the pitch heads dropped, where was the support from the head coach. No disrespect to young Gibson but Franklin was a left arm seamer, Campbell is a left armed. That would offer something different. He is okay to play for the Uni and Lancaster but can’t even feature for our 2nd team.
It is a bit like being at work when a Department falls out with it’s manager. Moral and performance drop then the manager moves on and normal service returns. As employees you are never aware of this sort of thing although you notice a difference in the workforce until iis made aware of a change in management.
I feel we are at this situation. Why would a head coach leave it to his captain to face the interviews in public. This undoubtedly puts even more pressure on Borthwick who I also feel is being told what to do on the pitch such as the declaration issue. Only time will tell and let’s hope it is not to late.

I appreciate it's not all the same people but theres people criticising Durham for having too many foreigners in the team, people criticising Surrey for signing an overseas player short term to cover injury and criticism for not making signings and having to play young lads who might not be ready

You can't have it both ways like.

And if the likes of bedders and rushy were performing in line with realistic expectations this conversation would probably be totally different
Totally agree, you can't sign players in case 4/5 players are injured or playing for England, that's exactly when you pick you youngsters to give them some experience and the odd game here and there. As you say our experienced players aren't performing, that's the issue.

@brandon why do you think we won't see Stokes now that he's captain? He'll have still played no cricket since the WI tour so still needs to get some match practice and rhythm.

Borthwick record last 4 years poor for us and Surrey
I know. I also know he's a very good batsman. So what is the problem. 4 years is too long to just say its a form thing. Does he have a form of the yips? I've wondered if he's tried to change his technique to be more suitable for T20 (where the money is) by being more open and less tight. I do think that as he's become a worse FC player he's a better at T20. Dunno.

Specious, wise-guy contribution.

Absolutely, I wouldn't have had him back on the reasonable assumption we would sign somebody better in his stead. As that clearly didn't happen, the club should arguably have renewed.

Same applies to Burnham. Despite his baggage and failure to kick on from early promise, he was still better than the gap in the squad. Unless you think our 18, 19 and 21 year olds are good enough...?

Is this legit? I am inclined to agree with Brandon, we won't see him in a Durham shirt this season.

 eh?

of course we will, thats not even doubt, where are you getting this from?

This is the whole point of him focusing on red ball cricket

so you are suggesting he will take over as England captain by playing absolutely no red ball cricket before hand?

haway man, the plan has been for him to place next week if he is over his injury

Mainly just because I’m a massive cynic

But I worry that the whole circus surrounding the appointment, the press appearances and then the planning for the international summer will mean his attentions are diverted away from CLS.

Obviously I hope I’m wrong.

Chris Rushworth will unfortunately play no further part at Hove due to concussion suffered yesterday and will be replaced by Oliver Gibson.

I heard he was concussed, hope he recovers quickly

You can never be too sure

Stokes told me last week he hopes to play in May. See what happens

He will absolutely play some part

He’s getting over injury and also they’ll be selective with how much he plays, just like they are with Joe root

Not really. The point being that you wouldn't have brought Bancroft back, but now 3 games into the season you're complaining that we didn't bring him back or replace him.

We did replace him, with South Africa's test number 3 who is coming off the back of superb winter. If he doesn't work out he doesn't work out, but you can't really criticise the club for the move. Even with the SMB's much vaunted 20/20 hindsight.

And Jack Burnham has had chance after chance and has done nothing with them, he had to go. The fact he's playing club cricket is his own fault, no-one else's.

We have Graham Clark in the squad, so along with Michael Jones we have two first team batsmen who aren't in the team. How many more batsman do you want to sign, out of interest?

Fuck sake, it gets worse 🤦‍♂️

IF we take enough wickets to get Tom Clark in, every bowler should target his head. Absolutely no call whatsoever for what he did.

On a wider point, it’s alarming how many players have already suffered concussions this season.

Orr lbw b Potts 27. 95-2.

Excellent bowling from Potts today, was absolutely plumb so I’ve no idea why it took Debenham so long to put his finger up. The prick.

Bloody hell. Not only are we on the way to getting tonked but the Sussex commentator has started reading poetry. Just when you thought things could not get any worse!

Fair enough  I think he'll want to make sure he's performing and he'll need a game or two to help him do that.
