Root steps down

Sorry like but your criticism of root is ridiculous the stats I laid out speak for themselves

Don’t really need to say anymore than that

Your defence of him is ridiculous. You'd think he was Brierley not David Gower listening to your appraisal of his tenancy.

Captain only as good as his players to a certain extent, personally I am with @The Rat with this as don’t think in general a different captain would have made a scrap of difference to results of the last few years.

However do think beyond ridiculous that Broad and Anderson were dropped from last series.

They’ll give it to Stokes but that won’t be the right decision either IMO.
It would smack of a Botham/Flintoff appointment - playing to the gallery. Equally, Burns would be a throwback to Brierley - there as Captain, rather than his merits as a batsman.

Not at all he’s done pretty well then had a bad period

You have an excuse for every single test series win

You used to do it under Cook too. I remember when you tried to write off cook winning the ashes like it was no big deal

It’s bizarre

Can you explain to me why loads of journalists are saying Sam Billings is the logical choice

What am I missing here?

Jimmy Anderson is a bit of an introvert though. Broad isn't. He's also got that Jardine self confidence arrogance thing.

Not sure that matters like. Botham and pietersen were both outraverts, I would say cook seems more an introvert, stauss was hardly the life and soul of a party. The quiet introspection night make for a better captain than just picking the loudest voice in the room.

I wouldnt pick Broad as a captain tbh

I would rather Vince than Billings.

Sam Billings is dogshit. But mates with Key

Broad and Anderson are senior players and both petulant prima donnas. As such they should be supporting the captain not being disruptive. Unless they perform in CC when they appear they won't be returning to test cricket.
Root won't have made this decision without consulting his best mate Stokes who, I suspect,is captain elect. The prima donnas won't mess with him.

Stop asking too hard questions😀

Still absurd. He’s never a test cricketer. And even if he was, he’s 4th in line with the gloves

I agree am baffled by it

He doesn’t even play red ball cricket

Athers put it well, something like “some people in English cricket are sucker for a posh accent”

Nope incorrect

2 batsman averaged overt 35

The results he got were Unbelievable

List 1 home series in his whole captaincy

6 away wins in Asia in a row

Stuffed South Africa away who then beat India

It’s amazing how people just dismiss these things and take them for granted
Totally agree.

I do feel he’s been coming to the end of the road for a little while. But he has to be commended for his batting while others have not been at the races.

I don’t see where we go for a captain. Stokes is likely to be considered but I’m not struck. I’ve said a few times the keeper is the best position for us as we are in a state of rebuild. But again we aren’t in a position of having a senior keeper.

So to save stokes I hope it’s a left field appointment

I think stokes could do it like. If he plays less white ball stuff

He’s very injury probe now like which is an issue

It’s worth noting that key said on his last pod that there’s no way he would make stokes captain. Wonder if that’s changed
I’m currently at Kent. He’s not playing funnily. Salt looks good mind

Nice scene thst like I can imagine

Aye seen his score. He’s an interesting player, with a lot of ability. I think his best chance is to try and convert himself into an opener

We don’t lack number 6s

Anyone else stand out?

I imagine key will be looking at someone very close to Kent. Billings or Crawley. Both disasterous ideas.

Strauss is still far too smart to take Rob Keys opinion over cold hard facts.

Again I agree short term he could, Stokes is a good leader by example but then Root has been too and this lot don’t follow. Stokes needs to drop the bowling load to 10-12 overs an innings not carry the attack. A massive moment in time this summer for England

Croft played well. Qadri now has a Michelle. Looking forward to seeing Crawley soon
Oh and Nathan Gilchrist looks like he has something.

I stopped listening to Key quite a while ago but suspect that he'd have been critical of Root's captaincy. Just wondering, given the timing of his resignation,if Root has got wind that Key is the new Director of Cricket.

I wouldn’t say that about key mate. Let’s wait and see, I don’t think he’s one for giving mates gigs, he’s a mentor to Crawley for sure but more a father figure than someone trying to give them an advantage

Who appoints the captain though, key or the coach?

He was critical but he actually wasn’t as adamant he should go as someone like atherton, he didn’t really offer any alternative

His argument was he would keep Root IF you could get a legend coach who could lead likr Ponting or Fleming

You’re right though the timing can’t be coincidence

Well he’s got the right surname for starters
