Quality of the Premier League

I don't watch it, but the PL clubs are doing well across the European competitions so they must be doing something right, unless the quality across Europe has gone to shit as well. Not so long back the media were bemoaning the fact that there were no English clubs in the semi finals most years
Mid table sides is what i meant.

In terms of athletes and sportsmen the standard is probably is as high as it ever has been.
Players now are absolute top draw in terms of technically, fitness, dedication, tactics, etc etc.

But there is defo an argument whether our game has moved from all out energy, in ya face, blood and thunder exciting football for 90 mins to what the Europeans used to be known for back in the day.

Example tonight.

Wolves just came to stay tight and draw or Nick a goal from a set piece.

As soon as Saudi Arabia scored wolves came out and tried to attack and the game was much better.

Why do teams try do that ????
Wolves are 8th in the league.
They sat back until they were forced to attack and then looked better !!

I find myself in arching the last half hour of games more regular now because that’s when teams below the top 2/3 start having a real go at eachother.

Absolutely on its arse isn't it?

I remember when we were in there and I could watch two random bottom half sides on sky and it was decent. These days it's never a decent game, quality is on the floor and boring.

Most competitive league in the world, probably aye. But there's much better entertainment in numerous European leagues.
Not sure what league you've been watching but I've watched quite a number of outstanding games this season.

Was the Chelsea Brentford match one of the ones you watched on Match of the day mate?
That's proving my point though tbh, Brentford have a go at teams, the same as crystal Palace. There's loads of teams there who are woeful to watch.

How can a team like Newcastle win 1 in 20 and still be safe with 10 games to go? It's mental like. Too many teams happy to 'try and nick it'.

Might be wrong here but a theory could be that every game is huge in terms of publicity now in the premier league.
Example.

Mid table Managers now go on a run of 4/5 defeats and they’re fearing the bullet ?

I’m 39 and when I was growing up watching the premier league grow. Managers seemed to get at least 2 years or so to progress teams or fail.

I agree with u by the way about style of games and entertainment of mid table teams.

In my memories it seemed Teams used to be always try and win. Maybe I’m remembering different.

If anything that proves that if teams open up and go at the big teams when they’re able to they can hurt them.

Teams seem to be petrified of the big clubs now and just accept a narrow defeat as an acceptable result.

The quality at the too teams is frightening and can rip any team apart I accept but 9 times out of ten they’re allowed to by the opposition changing the way they play and sitting with 10 men behind the ball to try and not get a hiding.

The OP talks about quality, but perhaps means entertainment.

Some PL games may be dull 0-0 and negative but the quality of the tactics, shapes and defensive play is immensely high and world class.

Meanwhile Wycombe 5-5 Cheltenham or Accrington 4-4 Cheltenham might be entertaining but the quality of play was awful at times with pub league levels of defending.

So it depends what you are looking for when watching a game and what you mean by quality.

Don't think it's any worse but you've got a load of teams shite scared of relegation. Means you don't get much of a spectacle.

Whenever anyone points out a side who plays decent stuff or a match that was surprisingly entertaining you say it's proving your point mate. It's just annoying that the mags are shite but staying up isn't it? ;)

You don’t hear many fans of clubs playing in the PL saying how boring it is, you don’t hear many fans of clubs not playing in it saying how exciting it is. Go figure. It’s almost as if sport is more exciting when it means something to you personally …. Who’d have thought it!

They had a proper team back then. Cole, Ballack, Drogba, Terry, Lampard, Essien etc. Easily better than their team now. The league was at its worst in my (relatively short) lifetime when we were scrapping down the bottom. Those teams wouldn’t get 20pts now. But the 00s was my peak. The Big 4 were amazing teams. It’s now the Big 2 followed by 4 teams miles behind but better than the rest

The 00s was the peak? That's when Mourinho went to Chelsea and Benitez to Liverpool. It's well regarded as being the most defensive and least entertaining era of the Premier League.

About as much as was “good” about making up the numbers in the Prem for all those years, scraping about every season trying desperately to cobble 34-38 points together to please the club’s accountant.

I’d had enough of that a good while before we were relegated from it.
So you didn't celebrate the great escape under Poyet?
You were Disapointed when BSA kept us up and sent the mags down?
You were relieved when Moyes took us down?

So that's Brentford and Palace sorted; Leeds have a go at teams and have been one of the most entertaining sides to watch; Brighton play some excellent football; Watford have a go in attack but struggle to balance that defensively; Southampton play with two up top; Leicester are usually a decent watch; Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal can be entertaining and/or show real quality; Man City and Liverpool are two of the best sides you'll see.

I'm struggling to see how your point is being proven really. Personally, I find West Ham boring and found Wolves dull under Santo, but even they've improved now. Burnley are different, then there's Newcastle and Villa who are improving under Gerrard and that's about your lot.

Which teams are you basing your views on?

Professional football in general is a bit “meh” now. It’s purely business. I’d much rather go to a Northern League game with 2 random clubs playing that I have no affiliation to.

They've gone on a good run, it happens. They've got 34 pts from 31 games.. League isn't any different to previous years.

I'd say West ham, wolves, Burnley, Newcastle, Watford are terrible.

Norwich are just utterly pointless, Brighton cannot score a goal.

Maybe I remember the games differently, but the entertainment is dire now.
