Today is the day we find out who England grind out a dour group stage against. The draw kicks off formally at 1738 U.K. time (very precise that), and is on the BBC Red button and the website

England are in pot 1. As the hosts are bizarrely. But we could get Germany who are in pot 2

Pot 4 includes the winners of Scotland/Ukraine/Wales and there are still 2 further unknowns

Australia/UAE playoff v Peru
NZ v Costa Rica

The very idea of a World Cup in Qatar is absurd as we all know
Hosts are always in pot 1 arent they?

Not sure if I’ve missed it, but when are kick of times and venues for each match decided? I read something about them moving them to be the best times for their audiences?

Erm no, that's just silly
Why's that mate ...if you a member of Al queda would you not attack the 2 countries that opposed you the most ....and attacking the match in question would get the most worldwide media

This is not the first time England and the USA have played in the World Cup, and the last one was when both were more embroiled in Middle East messes than currently.

Thought Jermain Jenas did a good job hosting that, although how he got the job is a bit of a mystery. Fair play to him though. Wonder if the rest of the world watching on had a clue who he is.

indeed, it clearly still stings so!

I'd rather have had the prospect of being in Qatar's group, to then get beat by wales and tell the grandbairns about the time we nearly won the world cup!
I want you to qualify. I think you have a chance of making the last 16, then who know, stranger things have happened in the knockout stages.

Yes Rob Green, and Clint Dempsey i remember it well, after Gerrard put England 1-0 up, the truth is we let our arrogance get the best of us in that match, i doubt Southgate will do the same.

That's very generous, think I'd be 'owa the moon' with getting out of the group stages for the first time ever, maybe reaching pot 3 for the next time round. Small steps... in reality Scotland have no strength in depth and that will continue to trip us up.

Looking at the groups and last 16 games and I'm fully convinced it's going to be England vs France in the QF.

Both should win their groups and have relatively comfortable last 16 ties.

Of course there's always shocks, but it's lined up almost perfectly for the above to happen IMO.

Why don't you have strength in depth is it because of the level of the SPL maybe or is it lack of talent on a mass scale, this isn't a dig generally interested ?

I don't think their has ever been a world cup where every group favourite has won their group ...I mean look at Germany last world cup ...had a group consisting of Mexico Sweden and south Korea and didn't even qualify ...anything can happen look at north macedonia v Italy ....complete waste of time planning who plays who in knockout stages imho .....

As was Mexico more so .. heat and altitude ... not once but twice .... to say nothing of the Olympics.

Which suggests trying to predict the future is a waste of time.

I'd like to think it's primarily the lag from a very long barren patch, we seemed to go a generation with the best talent being at too low a level. Walter Smith was getting a tune out of reasonably limited resources but then it virtually collapsed and there seemed to be less good prospects coming through, a trend that seems to have reversed to an extent now. I struggle to believe the SPL is the problem - plenty of nations have weaker top flights and still higher ranking national teams. In most cases much of their internationals play abroad and the road South that Scottish players once trod has become far less common. But you are semi-pro almost immediately outside the SPL so there is a lack of professional pyramid - how common that is I don't know. I have a feeling the strength in depth is the sort of thing that would improve by itself if there was a run of improved qualifying and results over a prolonged period, almost a 'national confidence' problem, the way we (SAFC) have a team one at present holding us back.

I'm not so sure. I think France are due a self-induced capitulation. It doesn't look like a bad route for us. Belgium are at the end of their golden generation and Brazil are very beatable these days. Of course, it depends on our lads turning up but I think we have a great chance. We have to hope Scotland qualify as getting Iran and that lot would be a breeze.
