New Music Releases Thread

My usual review of new and newish stuff this week:

Fatoumata Diawara: a mini-album in which her trad African sounds mesh with orchestral stuff. Really good!
Soul Revivers: reggae veterans do, er, reggae. Top stuff.
Claire Rousay: modern classical/electronica. A bit wibbly.
Swami John Reis: Speedo from Rocket From The Crypt returns. Very much like an RFTC album, which is fine with me.
Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs: the guitarist from the Heartbreakers does retro roots rock type stuff. This is a very, very enjoyable album.
Sonic Youth: largely instrumental, sometimes quite gentle, sometimes quite abstract.
Pictish Trail: an album themed around the Isle of Eigg, where he lives. This is a good, fun, leftfield pop album. For fans of SFA etc.
Babeheaven: they've lost their shoegazey feel and now are sophistopop. Decent.
Bogdan Raczynski: interesting and at times beautiful electronica. Great stuff. Very Warp.
Ditz: angry guitars from Brighton. Remind me a little of Metz. Promising!
Midlake: I'm enjoying this. Typical Midlake, well constructed songs.
Jerry Leger: a mate of Cowboy Junkies. This is good fun, quality singer-songwriter stuff.
Swamp Dogg:
the veteran blues man continues his late career revival. Fun stuff.
Mattiel: they've gone a bit less eccentric than on their first album. Still, a good leftfield indie album.
Blanck Mass: the soundtrack to something. Really good noisetronica,
King Hannah: I'm late to the party with this. It's a very good album of wonky male/female Mazzy Star type pop.
Wesley Gonzalez: probably his best album since Let's Wrestle.
Laura Cannell: modern classical music themed around birds. Fascinating!
Ceramic Animals: mates of Dan Auerbach. Some of this is good, some of it sounds like lukewarm Maroon 5.
Matchess: ambient ambience. Two long flowing tracks. Heartwarming.

Album of the week: probably Pictish Trail, although Mike Campbell goes close as do Soul Revivers and Fatoumata Diawara.
A couple of things there I wasn’t aware of (or not paying attention to your weekly list) so I’ve got Mike Campbell and Swami John Reiss to my library for tomorrow.

If anyone's a fan of A Tribe Called Quest fan then we finally got the posthumous Phife Dawg album yesterday on the sixth anniversary of his death. Got Q Tip, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Maseo and Pos from De La, Phonte, Pooh and Rapsody featuring with production from Dilla and 9th Wonder.

If you're a fan of Tribe you'll definitely like it. It's definitely got that soulful grown up sound of Tribe, Outkast and De La. Couple of songs on there that make Phil Elverum albums sound like they lack emotion, Dear Dilla and Round Irving High School in particular. The final song on the album was (partially) created three days before Phife's own death and they've turned it into a tribute to him, that's a gem.

A very very good album, a little surprised at just how good it is.

Looking forward to checking it out. The final Tribe album was superb.

Broadcast's Maida Vale Sessions (released last week) is great stuff. Their rare Microtronics vol 1 and 2 mini albums have been reissued on one album and even rarer tour mini album Mother Is The Milky Way has also been reissued. Broadcast were a big favourite of mine so I welcome these releases.

I'll give them a spout. Loved Broadcast, even better live than recorded IMHO.

Saw them just the once in Newcastle. Venue was the Quay Club. Only gig I ever saw there. Would be on a shortlist of gigs I'd return to if it were possible as my memory of it is extremely hazy. Such a sad ending with Trish Keenan's death but everything they put out was top notch.

New TVAM single out yesterday is an excellent follow up single after his top drawer debut.

It also come out a couple of weeks back but the new Whitney K single is also great. I don’t know much about him so if anybody could recommend a record of his before his new one please.

Aldous Harding and Destroyer stand out. Anything else you recommend?

Two Years, which came out last year is great.

Tindersticks, obviously, and Cowboy Junkies also. The Ibibio Sound Machine album is produced by Hot Chip so could be good. The William Loveday Intention is Billy Childish's latest project, I believe, so, if you like him, you'll probably like that.

Strong list for me,
Destroyer
Ibibio
William loveday

Good video. The song does nothing for me.
I don't disagree tp be honest. Her last 2/3 have been a bit bland for me. It's a shame as she has more of a punk pedigree than she's showing of late (she's in Frank Iero's band, been in a band with Dave Haus, and goes out with one of the Menzingers + supported Frank T several times). Disappointingly safe
