New Music Releases Thread

I love Marr, but have been extremely disappointed by his solo stuff. His last album reminded me of the terrible hard -fi.But this album is easily his best

Agreed, he’s a legend and fantastic bloke to boot but some recent records have been hit and miss. Love the closing track on this one. Very pretty.

My regular summary of this week's new and newish releases I've listened to. It's a solid week:

Gruff Rhys: cracking single. Warped elongated "a side" and ambient, psychedelic "b side".
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard: more of a one track mini-album than a single. Bounces around genres and sums them up in a song.
Star Party: short, snappy, punkier end of the C86 things. Pleasingly lo-fi.
Tanya Tagaq: she's gone from Inuit folk to noisy arthouse sound experiments. Reminds me a little of the Moor Mother records, but not.
Yin Yin: the mix of dance and worldy stuff that made their debut exceptional but not quite as good.
Jenny Hval: exceptionally good, as per usual. She's moved to a point where she's almost mainstream.
Alex Cameron: back on form after a blip. Witty as ever and hook laden. A charmer! This week's Jason Williamson guest spot occurs here.
Kee Avil: arthouse indie rock. Intriguing.
Bodega: they continue to perfect their formula, lying somewhere between B-52s and Parquet Courts. This is a very strong album indeed.
The Boo Radleys: back after however many years minus Martin Carr. It's a nice album but won't change your world.
Jeremy Ivey: I like this. Toward the less countryish end of Americana essentially.
Pan American: ambient Americana. Instrumental guitar tunes, a llttle ambient post-rockish.
Widowspeak: pleasantly woozy psych-indie. I like them.
Samana: much loved by Guy Garvey. Sort of folkish, filmic singer-songwriter type stuff.
Franz Ferdinand: their career spanning best of. All the hits and more. They're a very good pop band.
The Districts: a good, solid American indie rock album. They're a band that defines solid and this is solidly solid.

Album of the week: probably just Jenny Hval, pushed by Bodega and Tanya Tagaq.
There are new albums tomorrow from Babeheaven, Charli XCX, Mattiel, Midlake, Rosalia, Sonic Youth (unreleased material from 2000-2010), Yumi Zouma, Swamp Dogg, Pictish Trail and Jerry Leger. There's also a posthumous Phife Dawg album released on Tuesday.

That’s somewhat disappointing as a list. The Smile may or may not be imminent too

Island of Love got their first EP out today. Love the songs I’ve heard so far - very Teenage Fanclub.

Wesley Gonzalez has an album out today aswell. Don’t know that much about him but loved the song Wax Limousine that he had out a few months ago.

He used to be the main man in the much underrated Let’s Wrestle. His solo stuff has always intrigued me without loving it.

Apple Music won’t let me play the opening track on the new Midlake album, says it’s unauthorised content 🤷‍♂️. Seems to be playing the rest of the album ok.

Don't know how many of these are just US delayed releases that may have been on here in recent weeks, but I'm also seeing Maia Friedman (of Dirty Projectors), Shout Out Louds, and Rumjacks which might be one for @Mickdundee as it's celtic punk

The new Rumjacks EP was out 3 or 4 weeks back (it was supposed to coincide with the U.K./Europe tour that they cancelled due to COVID but managed to immediately jump on a plane to join DKM on a US tour) , but a few songs from a new split EP with Flatfoot 56 came out today.

The one that's listed for today has 8 tracks, but maybe that's an EP if they're short. It's also vinyl so maybe that's why it's listed late - it's getting increasingly confusing now that vinyl is coming out in some cases months after the digital release, so you get "new" releases listed that aren't anything of the sort (the others I mentioned are physical releases, too, so likely fall into that category)

Yeah, Brass for Gold is 8 tracks about 25mins long, but they referred to it as an EP when they announced it.

I know they were doing a fancy leather-bound cover vinyl release pre order a couple of weeks back so I’m assuming today’s release is physical.
Oh, and there’s also a Real McKenzies “Best of” album out today, but unless I’m mistaken everything on it is from their Fat Wreck Chords releases so only covers about a third of their entire back catalog.

I’ll check that out.

I think there was a Colin Hay album out yesterday.

Also a new Lande Hekt single - she did one of my favorite albums last year (singer of punk band, Muncie Girls, doing solo stuff)

My usual review of new and newish stuff this week:

Fatoumata Diawara: a mini-album in which her trad African sounds mesh with orchestral stuff. Really good!
Soul Revivers: reggae veterans do, er, reggae. Top stuff.
Claire Rousay: modern classical/electronica. A bit wibbly.
Swami John Reis: Speedo from Rocket From The Crypt returns. Very much like an RFTC album, which is fine with me.
Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs: the guitarist from the Heartbreakers does retro roots rock type stuff. This is a very, very enjoyable album.
Sonic Youth: largely instrumental, sometimes quite gentle, sometimes quite abstract.
Pictish Trail: an album themed around the Isle of Eigg, where he lives. This is a good, fun, leftfield pop album. For fans of SFA etc.
Babeheaven: they've lost their shoegazey feel and now are sophistopop. Decent.
Bogdan Raczynski: interesting and at times beautiful electronica. Great stuff. Very Warp.
Ditz: angry guitars from Brighton. Remind me a little of Metz. Promising!
Midlake: I'm enjoying this. Typical Midlake, well constructed songs.
Jerry Leger: a mate of Cowboy Junkies. This is good fun, quality singer-songwriter stuff.
Swamp Dogg:
the veteran blues man continues his late career revival. Fun stuff.
Mattiel: they've gone a bit less eccentric than on their first album. Still, a good leftfield indie album.
Blanck Mass: the soundtrack to something. Really good noisetronica,
King Hannah: I'm late to the party with this. It's a very good album of wonky male/female Mazzy Star type pop.
Wesley Gonzalez: probably his best album since Let's Wrestle.
Laura Cannell: modern classical music themed around birds. Fascinating!
Ceramic Animals: mates of Dan Auerbach. Some of this is good, some of it sounds like lukewarm Maroon 5.
Matchess: ambient ambience. Two long flowing tracks. Heartwarming.

Album of the week: probably Pictish Trail, although Mike Campbell goes close as do Soul Revivers and Fatoumata Diawara.
