Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Alternatives are much worse.

They have lost Crimea and the east before all this started.
Well, these were better terms than they were offered initially, as this round doesn't include that Ukraine "demilitarize," so there's some logic in continuing the fighting and seeing what else they can get Russia to concede.

The Kremlin knows they can't afford to keep going on like this forver.
Indeed, the problem is that innocent people are the victims of keeping this going for longer. I expect the Ukrainian military can keep the fight going for months, but the price paid will be a heavy one. And yet conceding to Russia's demands creates a future they don't want either, under the shadow of threat from Russia.

There is maybe an argument that they go along with most of the Russian demands, in the hope that a different future emerges in 5-10 years after Putin goes, and they can get back on course free from these shackles. But it's far from certain what that looks like.

All that will happen is they'll withdraw for the time being, learn from their mistakes this time round, bolster their forces over time and try again later.

Ukraine would become a vasal state. With no Ukrainian military, the Russians could roll in the tanks anytime they wanted.

I honestly think it will spread further than Ukraine if left to unfold as it currently is. Africa is lining up behind Russia and lots of countries are walking an absolute tightrope with commodity prices elevated the way they are. The price of wheat is more now than it was during the food riots in Algeria a decade ago and only going in one direction. We see price inflation affecting our disposable income, to some parts of the world it's having the absolute basics of life or not.

They have no need to take it yet. Focus should be on getting civilians out and those that are willing to stay and fight bogging down the Russians. Russia don’t hold all the cards on this, they carry on they will have to control and subjugate 40 million Ukrainians for potentially decades.

Not sustainable.

And besides even if Ukraine wanted to accept it the people probably wouldn’t. They especially wouldn’t if Putin puts Yanukovych in as a puppet. I doubt the existing military and security forces would even support him.

I'm not sure what the relevance is of this but it was in 2010 so after the invasion of Georgia.

Lynchian bizarre.

So the safe passage for Women and Children fleeing Ukraine only allows them to go to Belarus or Russia, once there they could be held as hostages and swapped for Ukrainian men.
Putin is really crazy enough to do this.
