Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

If he’s found guilty (not just him I’m presuming as his generals will have to have given the orders too) then what has he got to lose?

This might sound harsh again, but where do we draw the line? I’m not questioning that we need to help, but are we financially killing the west to help here?
Why not just go to war?

10 billion to the Us is nothing. Their latest aircraft carrier was 40% more then that. It’s also a bi partisan issue.

Add in all the other Western countries, UN, IMF, World Bank etc… Western money won’t dry up anytime soon. It’s a drop in the ocean shared across all those supporting them.

If that's the case I can see the Yanks kicking off something in Syria to keep them all occupied at home. I shouldn't imagine that it would be difficult. Besides the help that the Syrians can expect to get from the Russians should something start there is going to be much reduced.

The idea that the Russian Army has to bring in Syrian troops to show them how to deal with urban warfare - if true - is an indication of how inadaquate the Russian militray has become.
Their already is a war in Syria, has been for a long while it hasn’t just stopped Marra.

Are we witnessing genuine human concern, or the ability of global state-corporate interests to sell essentially the same story over and over again? The same bad guy: Milosevic, Bin Laden, Saddam, Gaddafi, Assad and Putin; the same Good Guys: US, UK, NATO and ‘our’ obedient clients; the same alleged noble cause: freedom, democracy, human rights; the same means: confrontation, violence, a flood of bombs and missiles (‘the best ones’). And the same results: control of whole countries, massively increased arms budgets, and control of natural resources.

Also, is this Johnsons Falklands moment?
Aye, watching the BBC news yesterday and seeing pictures of children dead in the street, I thought to myself "maybe Putin is actually the good guy."

FFS.

Russia about to play dirty?

Every country with nuclear weapons will use them if they know they are going to be defeated, so maybe that’s why Russians are paranoid about these power stations and think Ukraine could blow them up. Though I think Ukraine aren’t as crazy as Putin and his cronies to do that.

if the six point plan to save the world is anything to go by, I’d say he is left off the team sheet like Ronaldo in a Manchester derby game, rather than front & centre popping them in like de Bruyne & Mahrez with a fully cooperating team around them.

War ends the world as we know it. I feel deeply uneasy though that this is indeed the situation we are sleepwalking towards. I hope and pray everyday Vladimir Putin dies. His death saves the planet IMO.

Not sure it will be that dramatic but Fiona Hill gets a lot of time on here as a historian and she’s basically saying that all the circumstances and patterns that occurred in the lead up to WW1 and 2 are reoccurring.

We never learn. It was only 20 to 30 years after the horrors of WW2 and we were back within a fannies hair of a of a major Global conflict. And had it not been for a couple of peoples individual split second decisions a nuclear one.

We are absolutely heading to it. Just need to hope the people involved are rational, calm and most of all that we get a bit of luck. As much chance of an accidental escalation at the moment as a deliberate one

Just watching SkyNews, that woman was brutal to that MP.

He was trying to dodge questions but she just called him out. Called Boris a liar. Claimed 100 people have been sanctioned, she said its a lie and that sky news know its only 50 people so why did Boris say 100?

She would not let him avoid the question. eventually he just said he had to go and couldn't answer anymore questions

Didn't Russia ban this sort of thing a few days ago?

Banned tv?

Looks like Putin can recruit who he likes but no one allowed to put boots on ground to help Ukraine. Maybe Assad needs a wake up call.

Not sure that’s completely accurate. There is no Western armed forces on the ground but there are foreign legion and volunteers now in Ukraine from Western countries and also mercenaries. The ex Ukrainian President Poroshenko is a billionaire and was himself going to fund mercenaries.

I hope the Russians get battered but this is effectively like for like

I’m not convinced. I keep seeing dead Ukrainian kids on the news but NATO won’t consider a no fly zone for fear of angering Putin. Yes he can go nuclear but so can NATO. The rationale behind this doesn’t make sense, how long will the west continue to support Ukraine without taking action. The murders of innocent civilians cannot continue.
There's a limit to the action we can take without provoking a full tonto nuclear moment from Putin.

As it stands there are thousands dying and millions displaced. The nuclear scenario is millions dying and billions displaced.

The no fly zone was everybodies favourite thing for a while but in reality they're almost impossible unless you have air supremacy (not just air superiority).

I’m not saying we should attempt a no fly zone. It would appear to be as pointless practically as it would dangerous.

But the problem is Putin will be either willing to use nuclear weapons or not. So this argument is not going to go away now. Depending on what he wants at some point the West will have to confront him with the same risk in place or we just let him do what he wants

I read it that he would get them through official channels (Assad), the mercenaries fighting for Ukraine are not as far as I can make out being recruited through official channels.
