Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

I'd like to think people of the UK would be the same if we were in the same situation location wise as the Germans. Our government might act differently but I'd hope the people would act the same.

What Germany and the rest of Europe (all of us) really need to do if cut the gas purchasing off, for all the good work we do if we are giving Russia hundreds of millions a week then this won't ever stop.
Yes I'd definitely say the people of this country would rally round and help as much as they could.
We're already seeing groups collecting food and other needs to send over. I've got three spare bedrooms my kids have left home and it's only me and the Mrs rattling around the house. So I'd be happy to put a family up if we were being asked. There's a few comments on this thread bashing our country but I just dismiss them as bitter bollocks. When it came to the crunch the people of this country would pitch in. I'm certain of that.

and trigger WW3 and a possible nuclear response?
On WW3: if that is the price of defending the free world then so be it. It took WW2 to stop Hitler. It might take WW3 to stop Putin. I would rather live in WW3 than in a World that succumbs to tyranny without a fight.

On nuclear weapons: I do not believe he will use them. His focus is on rebuilding the Russian Empire, not ending it in a nuclear war. It’s posturing.

How confident are you about the last bit?

Best they could hope for is and allied force go in and help them and kick Russia out of all Ukraine and execute the Russian government.

Giving up any of the country just reaffirms to Putin and other dictators that if you invade countries you are rewarded with some of their land. That cannot be allowed to happen.
Although Id be confident in a land/air victory for NATO pukin really haa lost the plot.Cheers true patriots ✋

It’s a tricky one. No one wants nuclear war but if we allow Russia to take what they want then we all lose anyway. The more we do nothing the more he will take.

Only thing that will unify the democratic military is an attack on a NATO country. Getting everyone to agree military action in Ukraine is impossible as it’s not part of any agreement. I honestly think if NATO said “no more” collectively with military action then Putin would back off. Big gamble though and that would never happen anyway.

Yes, that was literally the whole point of my post.

I personally think Fiona Hill's analysis of Putin is too important to be lost in amongst a thread that we are trying to maintain as essentially a news source.

In addition it was not my link and I was simply affording @Bulwell the opportunity of starting a separate thread if he so wished.

In future before responding to my posts you might find it handy to engage your brain and actually read the links to understand the context of what I am saying.
:lol::lol: I think we are at crossed wires, and are were on about the exact same thing. Nee need to get yer knickers in a twist old lad. Anyway enough on this thread - lets not derail it more.

I'd rather not have ww3 to be honest. Russia alone lost more than 20 million people, we lost 500,000.
I'd rather there was a diplomatic solution before it gets to that point.

Very.

I was saying months ago he would full on invade the whole country when people were saying he was bluffing as it was obvious he wanted to do. So I am not someone who always says he won’t do it.

But his reasons for wanting to invade and bring the birthplace of Russia back into Russia are completely at odds with using nuclear weapons. It makes no strategic sense and would undo everything he hopes to achieve.

I also thought the consensus was that Putin had oligarchs under control through a complicated power web.

Isn't the play that stepping out line sees one drowned in trumped up charges of embezzlement and subsequent jail time?
Yes...like the second sentence of my post regarding Khodorkovsky.

Austria, Sweden and Finland are neutral. The west of Finland borders Russia and is further east than Moldova.
Finland also has a complicated history with the Russian Empire and USSR, to say the least. They tend to tread delicately because of things like Karelia.

You can’t be diplomatic with a man that doesn’t believe in it and spits lies in every sentence.
