Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

That’s probably both alarming and positive if true.

It suggests that Putin is acting alone and divorced from even his closest allies at this stage if he didn’t even tell his cabinet. It looks that way anyway on the videos of him. Which might mean there could be a growing plot internally to take him out. It could also mean he is increasingly isolated and paranoid which would make him a very dangerous man.

Could he have developed dementia, or other mental related illness, that has lead to this escalation?

Heard an interesting explanation for this on the radio this morning. Didn't hear his name but he was an ex-minister. He said that he'd had loads of problems with government lawyers who "play it safe". He said they'll have advised ministers that chances were say 70-30 that they'd lose any subsequent litigation. His advice......if government lawyers won't give you the answers you want go elsewhere and use private sector lawyers.
That's why he's raising the place to the ground?

Razing.

I see it as the quickest and easiest way to stop what's happening. Can't be easy though if you're a Russian politician, general or businessman looking to start the anti-Putin narrative.

AirBnB are doing this and asking for more home owners to come forward too.

Hmm it is hardly targeting relief at the poorest. How do people know it is going to hosts living in the war zone not some ex-Pat or even Russian paying some poor sod to look after the home.

Poo tin - "I think everyone must think about how to normalise relations, co-operate normally and develop relations normally," he adds.

Just finished his bender and the fears kicked in.

Watching the news with horror ....shame on the United Kingdom ,Europe and America ......a madman like Putin does not care about sanctions ....we have let the nation of Ukraine down

The Chinese have pulled all coverage of the premier league this weekend due to the fact all clubs have planned a show of solidarity such as Ukraine flags as arm bands, billboard, flags etc. This tells us all we need to know about where they stand now.

Start one off then - political implications of the Ukraine war - and we can all bicker away to our hearts content without derailing this one.
Yes, that was literally the whole point of my post.

I personally think Fiona Hill's analysis of Putin is too important to be lost in amongst a thread that we are trying to maintain as essentially a news source.

In addition it was not my link and I was simply affording @Bulwell the opportunity of starting a separate thread if he so wished.

In future before responding to my posts you might find it handy to engage your brain and actually read the links to understand the context of what I am saying.

Pricks.

I work with colleagues in China on a daily basis - they can easily get info (western view) on the Ukraine war

The west should offer an olive branch to bring Russia into the fold. Set a course of actions that slowing result in sanctions being lifted and Russia joining NATO and the EU.

Putin can spin that as a win.

But that’s the problem really. Apart from Moldova he has no where else to go now without it being an escalation with NATO.

He is 70. This is the beginning of the end for him anyway. He has clearly an immense hatred for the West and NATOs eastward expansion and his apparent vision for Russia of recreating the Tsarist empire has gone. He is also either unhinged or portraying being unhinged.

He may feel he has nothing left to lose and with the threat of nuclear weapons behind him feel emboldened enough to challenge NATO in the Baltic’s. Effectively saying what you going to do about it?

All of the arguments for not challenging in Ukraine still exist and the potential repercussions don’t change
Exactly, at the point he expands in to NATO territory then it would be world war 3. My point is that right now NATO countries are doing all they can while sticking to the contract between each other. The next move is by Putin and as we know it’s unpredictable.

The only question mark now is whether Moldova, Finland and Sweden join NATO. It is highly likely those countries will be next on any Russian expansion. Will they be able to join quick enough? For me it’s common sense to sort that ASAP.
