Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

The problem with bits like it is they are very one dimensional. I doubt anyone ever queried that Russia militarily will win this conflict. At least in the short term. But there are a huge number of other factors - cultural, political, economic - that means they might not achieve their aims. And by those measures last week was terrible for them.

I am sure that they will be able to conquer enough of Ukraine so that they can claim that they have won

But the number of troops and the cost of occupation long term are, I think, beyond them. They would have to pacifiy a huge country

Could be another Iraq

bloody hell, we got a bad cough and couldn't find bog roll for weeks - they are in a war and have plenty
Aye plenty there but have you seen the prices? £34.99 for the cheap and nasty stuff and £199.00 for the velvet type!

I'm guessing a few mercenaries paid for by friendly agents
An ex senior military bloke, now defence pundit, said on Friday night on BBC News channel that almost certainly various EU countries' and UK special forces operatives will have been in Ukraine for a while now, in mufti, training their opposite numbers in weaponry and tactics.

Seemed to know what he was on about.

Absolutely this.

The NATO bombing killed about 1,000 members of the Yugoslav security forces in addition to between 489 and 528 civilians. It destroyed or damaged bridges, industrial plants, hospitals, schools, cultural monuments, private businesses as well as barracks and military installations.

It's war, this is unavoidable hence why conflict in itself should be avoided.

That was a fraction of what has been laid down by the Russias

The Serbians are still furious about the NATO bombing and it is now a central part of Serbian national identity

Opposition to Russia and the Russian bombing campaiign will become a central part of Ukrainian national identity - any occupying power will always have to deal with that

Bleak

French President Emmanuel Macron told Russia’s Vladimir Putin he was making a “major mistake” in , that he was deluding himself about the government in Kyiv and that the war would cost Russia dearly over the long term, a French official said.

In the phone call initiated by Putin on Thursday, the Russian leader reiterated his determination to obtain the neutralisation and disarmament of Ukraine, whether diplomatically or by arms, the official told Reuters.

“There was nothing in what President Putin said that could reassure us,” the French presidential adviser said, adding that Putin had reiterated his “narrative” that he was seeking the “de-nazification of Ukraine”.

“’You are lying to yourself’,” Macron told Putin, the official said. “’It will cost your country dearly, your country will end up isolated, weakened and under sanctions for a very long time’.”

Absolutely this.
Logical really.

All sorts of, one would assume complex, weaponry will be nee use if the Ukrainians cannot use them straight out of the box.

The RAF bod said there were other aspects of assistance he couldn't or wouldn't discuss.

They're besieging a city are they not? And again how is this different to Libya, Baghdad and Yugoslavia.

You can be anti-Russian whilst at the same time acknowledging this.
I’m sorry, are you justifying the killing of civilians by an invading force against a non- aggressive sovereign state because “that’s just what happens”?
