Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

i think if you were to google Stalingrad (well Volgograd now) you'd be surprised at how far east it is

For some reason I always assumed it was either in eastern Ukraine or just over the border
About 600 mile from the Ukrainian border iirc, give or take. I’d like to visit there one day.

Americans also have visa-free Schengen travel. Doesn't make the US part of Schengen or allow Americans to settle as refugees/immigrants/asylees permanently.
I doubt there’s many tbf.

American or not, if I was escaping a war I’d want somewhere to go and worry about permanent asylum later.

Most Ukrainian refugees going west are entering Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, all in Schengen. Poland in particular is going out of their way to give asylum.

There's an American one (a Rivet Joint, which for those without the lingo are recon-gathering and largely signals intelligence; basically, listening posts) flying back and forth over Romania near Moldova right now too.

And if you can find FORTE10 over Romania, that's a USAF recon drone.

For the tankers, it looks like the UK is handling the northern sector (see RRR9140 over Lithuania now) and the USAF the southern part (LAGR callsigns that loiter over Romania).

A few more unidentified airframes flying under US military callsigns are in eastern Poland too, plus the two DUKE callsigns (which are Black Hawk helicopters) that seem to have been up there during the day pretty consistently.

Also note RSD088, a Tu-204 en route from Moscow flying west over Belarus. That'll be the Russian negotiation delegation coming in.

But we have, it just wasn't a legal binding one, its why we ignored it, I can tell you now if it suited us we would have used that mandate to intervene.

It isnt a NATO issue either, we could have acted if we wanted too, same as the other countries that signed the mandate. Problem is one of the worlds biggest Nuclear powers did the invading.

Poland second world war we had no legal treaty to go to war with Germany if they invaded, but we did as it was our red line. We decided enough was enough.

So I didn't overlook it and already explained further on in the thread after that post.

Clearly a war on civilians

We have been hearing from Ukrainians on the frontline of the war, who have been facing relentless Russian attacks for days now.

Oleksiy Demchenko, a 27-year old computer programmer in Kharkiv told the Guardian:

Right now we are just trying to hold on. To tell the truth it’s hell. There are a lot airstrikes.
They are hitting people’s houses, health facilities, the parks. I live in the centre of Kharkiv. We saw air strikes yesterday and we’re hiding in the bedroom because it’s the most secure place in house.
The Russians came into the city a few days ago but the army destroyed them. Now they are hitting us from outside. Yesterday I wanted to go out to fill bottles with water but air strikes were killing people. We have some social services trying to help us with deliveries of food and water.
I think their main goal is to break us psychologically because they want us to evacuate city. Its a terror tactic we saw in Chechnya and Afghanistan. But our army will protect us. People won’t surrender.

I'm American. If I could legally live and work in the EU on a permanent basis, I'd do it.

We're kinda getting off topic here, though, which is how refugee/asylee flows will be processed. It seems Poland has been taking the moral and policy lead on it.

45 here, but got Grangemouth 25 miles the other side of me, so i'm kind of screwed. not close enough to vapourise, but a lingering couple of weeks instead
They aren’t going to nuke small places like that. And they won’t aim for our nuke dens because they know we will launch whilst theirs are still in mid-air.

Not that there ever will be nukes fired in this war even once we and allies get involved.

The small worry is that if the Russian people are cut off from the rest of the world they are far more likely to believe propaganda.
