I've just seen this tweet and it looks like they're soon going to join Crimea to the Donbass region by getting Mariupol. This will as the tweet says form a land bridge to Odessa.

Tweeted about that an hour ago!
Kherson is just to the north of Crimea which makes it an easy target for the Crimean brigade but Mariupol is Azov territory which makes it v hard to take

The Neo Nazis with links to hanging and firing squads or the Russians. Is it possible for them both to lose?

That’s the picture the Evening Standard have gone with for their paper today:

I've just seen the video of what happened after this photo as it was under the #Mariupol hashtag that I'd only been looking at to see what was happening in that area regarding Russian forces. The spoiler below is a description but it doesn't have any images or video but don't read if you're senstive to even graphic descriptions.

They take the father away on a stretcher into the hospital while the work on the little lass in the ambulance. They lift her limp body onto a stretcher and into the hospital and a team keep working on her trying to resuscitate her. The father is seen again in a bad way being hastily wheeled to another part of the hospital past what I presume could be his wife on a seat who is waiting as she was also at the ambulance in tears at the beginning. It's awful watching them frantically working on the bairn and one nurse starts crying. The ending of the video hits you hard as they finally stop and cover her with just a hooded coat and then you see the little lass laying there by herself in the empty room as they couldn't save her! 😔

I wish I hadn't clicked it as I wasn't expecting to see that as I was hoping to see that they'd saved her. I don't think it's wise to share the twitter link even in a spoiler as I'm not sure people really want to see that kind of thing!

My boss sent me an update from the lad who lives in Kyiv

Hello John.
In general, the situation in Ukraine is very difficult. In Kharkiv and Kherson, the Russians are shooting civilians and shelling houses with "Grom" rockets. In Kharkiv and Kherson, the Russians are shooting civilians and shelling houses with Grom rockets. Kyiv is shelled every day and night in the same way, there are sabotage groups of opponents who are constantly trying to damage the city or put special marks on houses and military facilities, which will be used for firing rockets. For example, all weekend we were not allowed to leave our houses or shelters because there was fighting in the city. So while I was working on the project, I periodically heard loud shots and explosions outside my window. Recently I hosted a family who lost their house in a nearby town near Kyiv because there was heavy fighting and when the Russians were retreating they started shooting at houses and hit a nearby gasoline truck, it exploded and some houses around it were destroyed so they asked my friends for help and since they knew I could help them, they are now staying at my house until they can solve their problems. My father is on the front line and now I also take care of my sister and mother.
All in all, things are not doing very well, but I am hanging in there as I have to be strong and take care of my loved ones.
About your project, I can't stop working on it and there are several reasons for that. One, because it helps me get away from things a little bit and I want to do this project because it's very interesting to me and it's very important to you. And the second reason is, after all, this is my job and if I stop working on projects, I won't get paid next month. I hope you understand.
I very much hope that this war will end very soon and we will return to normal life again. And I am very grateful for your support and help. Thank you.

Unfucking believable!!!!

I am not a battlefield tactician but isn't a military convoy 47kms long a strange military formation. It looks almost bumper to bumper very vulnerable to attack. Wouldn't the vehicles be dispersed in the countryside around a city that they were going to attack? Who the heck would enter an urban area at one point in a long procession its not a parade. Maybe I am missing something here.

On another note although the video of Russian prisioners is suspect it has some credibility. When the Red Army went in to Prague in 1968 tank crews who were confronted by Czech crowds also had no idea why they had been sent there and were unsure what they should be doing. Maybe the Ukranians are playing on the memory of that but it I was the case back then that Eastern block troops didn't appear to be told very much
it feels like they dont know what to do. Maybe the word travelling back to the head honcho is that they are progressing faster than they are, so the general is sending the next line in but the front line isnt actually ready for them

although the 70 aircraft promised from other european countries is excellent news they're all Mig-29's iirc, which are primarily an air to air fighter and don't have sophisticated air to ground capability. they can carry conventional bombs but without guidance (happy to be corrected on that)

really need some air to ground capability (like the turkish drones used in the south). hopefully it's already there and we're just not been told about it. there is a US tanker over Romania right now

plenty of globemasters heading to poland as well so again hopefully plenty or anti aircraft or anti tank missiles on their way.

Updated: apparently they're also getting 14 Su-25's which do have close air support/ground attack capability. a fairly old aircraft

Another excellent article. The interviewee is Fiona Hill, born Bishop Auckland

It's an interesting read, worth persevering with, for the historical context. I've thought for a while that we're still seeing the repercussions of that shot in 1914.
Why does being born in Bishop Auckland add any gravitas?
Spennymoor would carry more weight.

Good morning/afternoon/evening wherever you are in the world and welcome to our live coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

These are the top developments of the past few hours:

‘Dozens’ of people have died in Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv after heavy bombardment by Russian forces in the past 24 hours, according to local officials. Footage shows Grad missiles raining down on the city.

The international criminal court’s prosecutor has announced that he will launch an investigation into possible war crimes or crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

Russia has assembled a military convoy north-west of Kyiv that stretches for 40 miles, according to satellite images taken by a US company. A major assault on the Ukrainian capital has been expected for days.

The invasion has fallen behind schedule thanks to fierce Ukrainian resistance, and multiple equipment and logistics failures, according to a classified US briefing. The US also expects a “long and bloody battle” for Kyiv, US senator Chris Murphy said.

British prime minister Boris Johnson will fly to Nato’s border with Russia on Tuesday to meet leaders of Poland and Estonia, and British troops.

Disney has called off all upcoming theatrical releases in Russia, including Pixar film Turning Red, as international businesses continue to withdraw from Russia. Warner Bros and Sony are pulling The Batman and Morbius respectively.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN read aloud a text message exchange said to be between a Russian solider in Ukraine and his mother shortly before he was killed.

The US will expel 12 members of Russia’s UN mission, accusing them of having “abused their privileges” by engaging in espionage that is harmful to national security.

i was following that on another twitter thread. it's landed i think at Bratislava(?)... does seem strange. could be diplomatic or similar
I agree flying on a course like that in these times you would have to make absolutely sure that your were recognised and had permission. If you didn't I think that at the very least you could expect to be intercepted by military aircraft

Thing that worries me about how this is playing out is that I don’t see an off ramp for Putin. His country has regressed economically by 30 years practically overnight. He knows he’s created a pariah state. Desperate people do desperate things.

I hope there are some modern day Henry Kissingers out there, time for skilled diplomacy not seen the Cuban missile crisis.
