The deterrent staff will have been on high alert for weeks I imagine, they’re just announcing it now for effect I suspect. Certainly if I was planning to invade a sovereign state bordering NATO I’d already have all my defensive capability on alert including nuclear options.

After the performance of his army I wouldn’t be surprised if the nuclear weapons were a bit rubbish as well. Hopefully we will never find out.
I cannot understand why we need to think about spending more on defence when the only threat to Europe has just had an utter shocker against a small not very wealthy country.

There’s only ever been two nuclear missiles launched against civilisation hasn’t there? Both were in the mid-1940s I believe. One was Hiroshima and I forget the other one.

For whatever reason, nothing came of a nuclear threat during the Cold War. One potential reason is maybe Russia thought USA would neutralise it.

It’s never going to be 100% accurate, but the US appear confident it’ll likely neutralise the launch of nuclear weapons.

Lyse Doucet says that caution should be applied to talks between Russia and Ukraine. Details still very sketchy but could be a significant development.

Reuters reporting that two teams are at meeting point on Belarus border.
