Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

I did have a view of Putin as being quite calculating and he rarely doesn’t get his own way with things he has control over. I just can’t believe he didn’t think the Ukrainians would put up as much of a fight as we’re told they’re doing. Would be a big change in form.

I hope it’s true that the Ukrainians are putting up a bitterly strong resistance, and if they are I hope it’s not what Putin expected.
Think he's reached an age where he wants a legacy of some description. And the people of Ukraine have been the victims of that desire.

Too many people on this thread going into finite detail of whether some of the Ukrainians can be defined as 'heroes' due to their political persuasions. Why can't people come to the conclusion that there are everyday heroes who do heroic things in everyday life, and then there are war heroes like every single Ukrainian over there fighting to defend their homeland?

War time is completely different to peace time and I'm personally in awe of that heroism shown by the people who are willing to lay their lives on the line to defend their liberties from the people who seek to take it from them, but it doesn't mean I will agree with everything that they say or do.

"I fought the nlaw and the nlaw won..."

honestly, these, javelins, stingers and IEDs will suffocate the russians. i hope the ukranians have bought enough time to get loads of these into the country.

Looks like there’s no one in that truck M, so very possible that’s the same for the tank. May well have run out of fuel.

They look a handy piece of kit though.

Aye they've set up a phone line for Russian families to call in and ask about the status of their family.
It’s also a good part of the propaganda war. Russian media is telling people Russia is purely defending the Donbas against attack. If a mother rings up and her kid tells her he was captured trying to invade Kiev where residential blocks have been bombed it may make her question things and go out and protest with others.

I think a lot of people like to think they’d do the same thing. I would too but it’s a lot easier for me sitting here on my phone with in the warm with a coffee in my hand. Let’s hope we never have to find out what our grit is really like.

I've seen quite a few interviews with former military bods over the past few days and the thinking is, is that Russia likes to send in the expendables first as a softener.

There is also concern that he is holding back his best for other operations.
Like an internal coup? Or an attack on Russia?

I think, no matter what the outcome of this and I sincerely hope it's in Ukraine's favour, Putin has lost.

He will have lost the respect of his inner circle, the support of his citizens and the fear factor from the west.

In my opinion he has greatly miscalculated this and it will be the beginning of his downfall. Hope it's painful for him.

They’re heroes, they may be flawed but that doesn’t matter in this moment.
Yes they can be dealt with later. We went wrong on Syria, refusing to deal with Assad as it would help ISIS. Really we should have got rid of Assad, and then turned round and got rid of ISIS after whilst our troops were there.

Once the Russians are gone, most Ukrainians will reject the far right for something more tolerant. But for now, utilise their strengths.

The African fella on the station said they had took the women and kids. If this is the worst thing that a few Ukrainians do in this war then I still give the brave wonderful people have my utter utter respect. It is now on my list of places I want to see before I die. The list isn’t very long but I hope to go to a peaceful and fully restored Ukraine.
I’ve always fancied Chernobyl. I’m not sure what I’d think of Ukraine overall, I loved East Germany in most respects, beautiful place with juxtaposition of really soviet architecture and amazing historical towns like Schwerin. The people were incredibly generous and friendly but I also saw shocking levels of racism and antiquated views around disability so was ultimately conflicted. I suspect Ukraine, and lots of other places to be fair, would be much the same.

i've seen another thread on twitter that suggests that the tank was empty, though if it was me and i thought it was empty there's no way i'd use a weapon like that on it.
it could actually be an rpg and not an nlaw as well, which could make sense as they're more available and cheaper.

at the end of the day, one less russian tank 👍

Best video I’ve seen explaining why he’s doing what he’s doing. It’s a it reductive but will be useful for some:

The bloke filling isn’t exactly taking the cover you’d expect if it wasn’t empty. Either way, we can see how simple (not easy) it is to take a tank out relatively cheaply.

I know this is just my opinion, but I think we probably will do within our lifetimes unfortunately if you are around the 30-40 age range. I'd not be over-enthusiastic at the thought of it, but I wouldn't be averse to hosting a Molotov out my window into a tank and watching it blow up either if I was in the Ukrainians position right now.

Ukraine has been more than fair with who they have taken in mate, people see it as cruel letting families know they are captured but they are alive and being treat well and fed. During this horrible war Ukrainians have showed and displayed amazing humanitarian skills showing the world even when they are going through hell they are thinking about mankind.

I don't disagree with that one bit mate.

I haven’t watched the video but blokes shouldn’t be trying to leave.

Not saying they should fight if they don’t want to, but they need to do what’s best for their families and then go home or go and grab a weapon.
I think it’s asking awful lot of any civilians to do that but civilians who may have no link to the Ukraine other than employment or study shouldn’t be “ conscripted”.

The Ukrainians are suffering enough already, last thing they need is someone turning up in a G-STAR RAW hoody shouting 'Who are ya'
Plenty of people in this country with ties to Ukraine. It could actually bit of an escalation depending what the “support” is.
I think he's a lunatic - like Hitler - and his recent rambling, incoherent monologues confirm this

Hopefully someone from within his inner circle tops him
The bloke has been isolating himself, seemingly triggered by covid, which won’t be helping his paranoia.
