Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

tbf Russian people have had enough time to get their act together over the years and stand up to Putin, but they've not done it.
Please stop posting utter nonsense on this thread. It is quite a valuable source of information and isn’t a place for the usual shite. Or post as much as you like but as I said to Apache I’ll just stick you on ignore.

The bit I don’t get, so humour me, is how he holds it. He can put a puppet in place, but they have had years of democracy (relatively), and the ill feeling must be through the roof.

Do they seriously have the troop numbers to hold it for years?
600,000 Russians-200,000 Ukraine. So yes they do.

Some facts - Since the dissolution of the USSR, Russia had a large military / naval base in Crimea. In 2014, the US overthrew Ukraine's government, aiming to make Ukraine an outpost for NATO or NATO's interests, and to kick Russia out of Crimea, which is an exceedingly valuable strategic point on the Black Sea.
In response to the US-orchestrated coup, Crimea, which had tried to leave Ukraine and rejoin Russia for decades, lawfully chose to join Russia. And the heavily Russian-ethnic regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine declared their independences from Ukraine and also sought to join Russia (but Russia didn't accept them).
This infuriated the US and NATO, which then proceeded to funnel weapons into Ukraine and train Ukrainian troops and also Nazis, and encourage Ukraine to not stop trying to take Donetsk and Lugansk back by force. Years ago, Ukraine also signed the Minsk accords, under which Ukraine agreed to grant Donetsk and Lugansk autonomy within Ukraine. But Ukraine never upheld the agreement and continued to try to retake Donetsk and Lugansk by force.
After 8 years of Donetsk and Lugansk being brutalised by Ukraine, Russia decided it'd had enough and finally recognised the independence declarations of Donetsk and Lugansk, and agreed to protect them, from Ukraine's attacks.
As Russia moved forces into Donetsk and Lugansk a day or two ago, the shelling of those regions by Ukraine's army stopped for a while. That was the first calm those regions had had in years. But then, for who knows what reason, Ukraine started heavily shelling those regions again, and shelled them all last night and today. And this time, Russia's military was in those regions. In response, Russia had launched missile strikes and some other operations against Ukraine, taking out Ukraine's air defences and airforce, as well as other military targets.

Quite a powerful speech. He seems like a very respected leader. He knows that he is target number one and his family are targets number 2 (which says a lot about putin) but he’s staying where he is, probably knowing deep down there’s a massive chance he will get killed.

Interesting story to him. Six years ago he created and starred in a series about a common man becoming president and that’s how became so popular. His party is the same name as the tv show. I think whatever happens, he’s gained a massive amount of respect from around the world.

No offence meant, but your showing a little lack of understanding of what goes on over there imo.

challenge policy and you end up being removed to a camp for re-education or worse. Russian people live in still live in fear and the protests last night was either very brave or very stupid or both, I was not surprised to hear 1700 people picked up and rushed away. Putin has an Iron fist to hold onto power and wont let anyone challenge that.

America and the U.K. hugely outnumbered the Taliban. How did that end up?
Take your point mate, but a different kind of enemy. Ukraine have conventional troops and not a vast network of underground Guerillas. Plus, while there was some collateral damage against the Taliban, we tried to minimise that. Putin won't give a fuck about it. He will just carpet bomb the lot, civilians and all.

It's pretty much word for word what was being broadcast on RT when I had a look yesterday.
I think it’s been popping up on Facebook, my wife asked me if any of it was accurate. Of course some is but only from a very pro Russian viewpoint and not to be taken at face value. Presumably Russian bot at work.

I can't believe all the Western governments are sitting about watching this happen. It's an absolute outrage and the response is a few bank accounts get frozen.

I get that we don't want a nuclear war. So let's watch civilians in Europe be bombed and put ourselves in manacles.
Maybe the west is letting it unfold without military intervention as they know it will get really messy and hopefully the Russian people will not except what Putin is doing, if the west attacked Russian troops, that would give Putin every excuse he needs.
