Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

I don't think he's particularly bothered about the economic fall-out, or has given it much thought at all. He's isolated from it as an autocrat, and he's not exactly going to have to account for it any time soon to the Russian public. Every time a rival politician comes to the fore, they eat or drink something nasty and/or disappear.

This smacks of of an egotistical, evil autocrat trying to write his name in to history before he runs out of road. He's almost 70 and doesn't have a lot of time left to build his mental legacy.

Sanctions need to be targeted beyond Putin, imo. They need to be strong enough to guide the hand of whoever comes next.
As has been said on this thread, I think Putin needs to be isolated. The last thing we want is to galvanise the Russian people to be in his side.

I don’t understand why acceptance of that is supposedly rational though.

Why do we have to simply accept Russia can do what it wants? You could quite easily say Chamberlain thought the same in the 30s and look what happened there.
The intelligence so far has been pretty accurate and we can launch a defensive pretty quickly these days. If there's any shred of evidence that he plans to expand the invasion then I agree, we need to retaliate. However, the last thing Putin wants is to completely destroy the infrastructure of a country that he wants control of. If we see civilian targets and signs of oppression, then again, I agree with retaliation. I prefer a measured approach.

I suppose sanctions that bite amongst the general population could go one of two ways, couldn't they? He'll try to sell them as "Western attacks on the brave Russian people", but there's a fair chance that the public start to realise that he and his lunacy brought this on them, and that it doesn't need to last if he doesn't last.

What is there? Has no NATO country been involved in any war since joining NATO?
Massive difference between nato and a nato country but you know this.

Nato cannot get involved. A particular country who is a member of nato can.

But again you know this.

I dont think Putin has lost his mind at all. Think he has always wanted this and has been biding his time till everything is right.

By the way they have been setting themselves up for the last decade or more, I'd say this has been part of his plan all along.
I think he's been planning this for 30 years, maybe not to the level of detail of today
This is the bloke who says the break up of the Soviet Union was the biggest tragedy of the 20th century.

This is what I’m struggling with. People seem to be justifying action based on NATO membership. Are the lives of the people of the Ukraine worth less because their govt hasn’t joined NATO?
The thing is Putin is blaming his actions on NATO. So Ukraine pays the ultimate price for wanting to be ally, so we just sit back and say shame. It does make me feel some commitment to the Ukrainian people. I wouldn't let a thug down the road bully someone because they wanted to be my friend. I would feel involved.

But he is going to overthrow, by military force, a democratically elected government…I respect your viewpoint but I can’t accept that we do nothing about this.
