They're leaders who by and large value democracy, peace and concensus. Avoiding conflict that puts their civilians lives at risk is an absolute last resort. You're right in that this mindset could ultimately give Putin a route to achieve his aims but there isn't really an alternative.
Be interesting to see how it plays out. Concerning times ahead

Yeah, I like the separation. SMB is tranquil compared to the madness in Politics Board.

Anyway, I'm dusting off the Jeep and going all wolverines up Sutton Bank when they reach our shores.

Random fact, my uncle is responsible for the park and viewing area at the top of Sutton Bank. It was when he was a planner with North Yorks Moors

So what kind of numbers can the UK, France, USA, Germany, Australia, Italy, Portugal, Israel, Spain, Japan, Ukraine, Poland and other allies muster up troop wise ? Enough to scare off Russia or not ?
Not really, there was a paper exercise a couple of years ago, we'd be lucky to get enough troops on the ground to be more than a speedbump inside a month.

The Russian economy is tiny, he can hint all he likes. He just wants to build internal support.

A dictator who dreams of a communist state has no care for an economy or internal support. What little humanity inside of him is totally gone.

Evidenced by when he shouted at his own commander live on Russian TV, disagree and you're off to the gulag is how it goes now.

I admire you for that, but I promise you this country will go down without a fight. We do not take seriously Russian interference in our democracy, see below for what Russia's done to us so far, and we haven't as a country done a single thing about it. We are literally going down without a fight
  • UK government failed to investigate evidence of successful interference in democratic processes
  • ‘Credible open-source commentary’ suggesting Russia sought to influence Scottish independence referendum
  • Russian influence in the UK is ‘the new normal’
  • Links between Russian elite and UK politics
  • Intelligence community ‘took its eye off the ball’ on Russia
  • UK’s paper-and-pencil voting system makes direct interference harder
  • Defending UK’s democratic processes is a ‘hot potato’
  • Errors in Salisbury poisoning and weapons watchdog hack do not diminish Moscow threat
  • New legislation needed to replace outdated spy laws.

The United Kingdom is one of Russia's "top targets" and is "seen as central to the Western anti-Russian lobby".

And another excellent post. People turn a blind eye to foreign interference in our politics, but Russia in particular has tried to meddle and gotten away with it because our government is unsure how to respond, when it is benefiting them.

Russia invades and takes the two areas with Russian separatists in charge. Bluster from the west while Ukraine fights back. Russia either falls back when economic sanctions hit the country too hard and internal rest increases (e.g. 2014) or Russia takes those areas as they are better prepared this time. In a few months time regardless of the result of the skirmish the world moves on like normal.
It might be the only way out of this mess, him taking them two areas. He can then back down and say to the world look how hard I am, I definitely don't have a micro penis. I don't think he can win, but wont back down unless he can spin it.

The vast majority of those countries troops lack the skills required armed combat in the region too.

We've had special forces in Ukraine for months now. I know because my mate's son has been there for 2/3 months although I'm not sure what role they have been playing, whether training or just monitoring.
I very much doubt that you would be in the know of where our special forces are, your mates son is a huge security risk so is your mate and now so are you if this is true. Your either a talking shit or b your mate is very stupid to tell you and the son has put his career at risk.

So everyone is fucked, surely it can't come to that ?
