They're leaders who by and large value democracy, peace and concensus. Avoiding conflict that puts their civilians lives at risk is an absolute last resort. You're right in that this mindset could ultimately give Putin a route to achieve his aims but there isn't really an alternative.

Not really, there was a paper exercise a couple of years ago, we'd be lucky to get enough troops on the ground to be more than a speedbump inside a month.

And another excellent post. People turn a blind eye to foreign interference in our politics, but Russia in particular has tried to meddle and gotten away with it because our government is unsure how to respond, when it is benefiting them.

They’ve been over here on exercise for over a week. The Americans aren't about to start bombing raids.

Russia invades and takes the two areas with Russian separatists in charge. Bluster from the west while Ukraine fights back. Russia either falls back when economic sanctions hit the country too hard and internal rest increases (e.g. 2014) or Russia takes those areas as they are better prepared this time. In a few months time regardless of the result of the skirmish the world moves on like normal.

It might be the only way out of this mess, him taking them two areas. He can then back down and say to the world look how hard I am, I definitely don't have a micro penis. I don't think he can win, but wont back down unless he can spin it.

We've had special forces in Ukraine for months now. I know because my mate's son has been there for 2/3 months although I'm not sure what role they have been playing, whether training or just monitoring.
