during the brexit negotiations we were told if we werent a member of the club we couldnt have the benefits of membership ( fair enough) , so how do the the ukraine now get NATO benefits whilst not being members?

You do know they're two completely separate clubs right? Right?

#Breaking International News

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, a halt to weapons shipments to Ukraine and an end to Ukraine’s Nato bid.

The first doesn't seem too bad (No idea how Ukrainian's feel about this) its practically Russia now. I think the second could be agreed as long as he winds his neck in and sends his troops back. Should be told the fuck off on the 3rd, he cannot dictate a country that is not his just because he wants to invade them whenever he needs a political boost or his ego boosted. I don't believe him when he says its about NATO.

Putin doesn't care about 'sanctions' or strongly worded letters. Beyond embarassing how the West think this type of shite works.
I agree. He has so much money stashed away that he has stolen from the Russian people, sanctions will not affect him personally. Maybe some of his oligarch friends might if their movement is restricted.

Sounds like the heavy weaponry is being ramped up tonight. Will Ukraine backdown or defend the territory when Russia rolls its tanks into the non separatist parts of Donetsk & Luhansk?

Picture on who buys Russian gas in the EU. We are shown as blank as a non-member
I’ve read we get 5% or so of our supply from Russia. Seems Putin’s gamble is that as prices of energy ( and therefore pretty much everything) soar with Nordstream 2 being binned, it will be politically untenable for the likes of Germany. Or at least create political instability in countries reliant upon that supply. Massive social media bot campaign likely to follow to try to sow the seeds of this, coupled with regular cyber attacks on particularly banking. Can see this developing into NATO having to post more and more forces in the likes of Estonia and Lithuania with potentially Russian forces not far away. Hugely unstable situation where any mistake could escalate things quickly. Very dangerous, a financial and political tinderbox. The other factor is Russias claims over Ukrainian territory means under guidelines for a country to join NATO, particularly that any country entering must have no ongoing territorial disputes, means Ukraine couldn’t join.

The bit that Russia now recognises includes one of Ukraine’s biggest cities and main ports. Surely they won’t just give that up

Ukraine isn't getting the full benefits of NATO membership. If it was part of the alliance then Article 5 ("An attack on one is an attack on all") would apply in full and we would be treaty-bound to get involved.

These sanctions are pathetic, they’re expecting to take over at least part of a country and we announce strict sanctions that stops 3 people coming into our country and 5 banks can’t trade here, should absolutely isolate any and all russian trade outside of their own country to absolutely cripple them
