Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

It's not, really, it's justification from Russia to be able to send troops in and say they're not invading another country.

The only reason these areas "broke away" from Ukraine in the first place was cos Russia supported the rebels that made that happen.

If you and your mates have a rebel army capable of holding off any attempts to take Sunderland back and the support of locals who don't flee you could go for it.
The reason the areas wanted to break away from Ukraine is because they are full of Russians and the country went on a policy of alienating all things Russian.

Can I ask something because I don’t understand. How is it a newly recognised country/state? Like is there not an official process to this because and im playing this down a lot here I know it seems like a group of me and my mates deciding we don’t want Sunderland to be In England and declaring it not to be. Sorry I know that’s a shit example

This is kind of what I mean
Newly recognised by the Russian Federation. If there is a mandate then any political entity could declare themselves independent, for example the SNP could run on a single point manifesto - to secede from the U.K. if they win a majority in Scotland. International recognition is the hard part.

Is ir not the same scenario as Kosivo leaving Serbia?

In 2014 they declared themselves a separate state from Ukraine but were never officially recognized by anyone (that's a huge part of becoming independent) Last night Russia agreed they were separate states and signed a peace act with them and decided they would help protect them. I think Belarus signed the same deal.

I'd like to point out Russia recognizes Taiwan as China.

I’m not sure Ukraine has anything to gain by not fighting back. It just delays the inevitable.

Putin made it quite clear his ambition extends to the whole Ukraine and maybe more.

Letting him have Donbas won’t satisfy Putin. Ukraine will be back here in a few weeks with a new Russian false flag or perceived justification to keep going.

Unless they are prepared to fully surrender and become a vassal state back in Russia’s orbit they will have to fight.

Letting Russia get a bigger foothold doesn’t seem logical

When was this?

Absolutely no chance he could hold a country of 40 million with a largely hostile population - they wouldn’t even try.

The territory he has moved troops into is largely pro Russian, speak Russian, and have Russian passports.

The Ukrainian government is under huge pressure from the right to react against Russia, and might be overthrown by the far right if they don’t. They’ve been harassing the population of the republics for months to try and appease the right, and Ignored Putin’s demands for them to adhere the Minsk agreement. Now they have created this mess for themselves.

They won’t fight back to try and get the republics back as they would get pulverised by the Russians - they couldn’t even take care of “russian backed separatists” a few years ago. Putin won’t advance either because they won’t over extend themselves either. NATO have made it clear that they won’t help at all. EU are staying quiet too as they want Russian gas.

Unless some suicidal Ukrainian Nazis try and get themselves killed there won’t be any fighting - it will just be more sanctions and more hot air and nonsense from UK politicians, and media, who despite all the pompous drivel are almost completely irrelevant in this.

It’s already over and Putin’s already won.

To be fair Taiwan recognises Taiwan as being part of China as well. It just claims the rest of it.

Russian isn't exactly a minority language in Ukraine. It is spoken on a regular basis by almost everyone, for obvious reasons. More than half of the population also speak Ukrainian regularly and many rural populations in the west of the country use it as their main form of communication.

Imagine if the Irish government decided to stop people in Dublin watching their favourite programmes in English, or read English language books, or the same in Cardiff. That would cause an uproar and those people consider themselves very much Irish and Welsh. If that wasn't bad enough imagine a united Ireland and doing the same thing in the North. That is the situation in Donbas.

Are the Ukrainian government stopping the people of Donbas speaking Russian?

Not exactly, but as the government became more nationalist it brought more policies in to make things 'more Ukrainian' across the whole country by doing things like stopping the import of a lot of Russian language literature etc. These people were happy to be part of a multi ethnic inclusive Ukraine but felt like they were becoming 2nd class citizens. Most people in this region felt both Ukrainian and Russian.

It was a different scenario in the Crimea where the vast majority of the people have always just been Russian and nothing else.

Interesting to see what EU reaction is. Russian gas is 40% of EU gas imports.
Our government needs to think long and hard about fuel and food security in the coming years.
More than just a whiff of 1939 about it. Terrifying really.

Very naive.
Germans invaded Poland because they thought the British wouldn’t be daft enough to declare war. There is definitely a whiff of Munich about this.

Why would Russian oil and gas affect the UK in the same way?
A lot of people fail to grasp that point.
I know mate. A lot of people, and it seems whole countries don't seem to appreciate that there are almost always two valid sides to every argument when it comes to which country should own what.
