That kind of thinking is exactly why Russia continues to do this. They are given free reign and the West rolls over. Why exactly? NATO out flanks Russia in pretty much every respect. The US alone do massively with a military budget 45x the size. But Russia can run riot why the West tries to appease
So Russia invades and Nato goes in. Nato pushes Russia back, what happens? We stop at the border and are there for years to come? What if Russia pushes Nato back and takes Ukraine (likely scenario)? What then?

And most importantly, why are we interfering. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't half the Ukraine want to remain Russian?

No one knows as there has been no democratic vote. We are intervening as it’s on our door step and why would we want Russian encroachment on Western Europe

Not now that Crimea has been absorbed into the Russian Federation. There are two regions that want to be independent of Ukraine but there's no indication they want to be part of Russia.

Surprising amount of support for Russia on here. Not a big fan of authoritarian regimes, especially the ones where the leader gets nearly 80% of the vote every time.

I don't think there's been many? Unless you are doing your whole 'most on here hate the UK' routine which is absolute bollocks of course, it's quite a complex situation.

Have the West not encroached onto Russia`s borders?? Isn`t that why Putin is nervous. Let`s not forget Russia has been invaded by the West twice in the last hundred years and now NATO are nudging next to Russia. Can you imagine the reaction if Russia was in Mexico with troops and missiles in place? Maybe the diplomats should take a step back and stand in Russia's shoes and try to see why they are not happy instead of constantly prodding them and winding them up.

There is a huge Russian naval exercise in the Black Sea that all but cuts Ukraine off. Just 15km stretch of water left to access their coast. It is scheduled to end same day that Olympics end. They've moved hypersonic missiles into Kaliningrad that can now hit UK.
USA have moved B52s into UK & fully armed F15s into Poland. They're telling all Americans to get out of Ukraine with immediate effect this morning.

My bet is that Russia goes in on 20th after Olympics done.

Huge risk of an accidental USA vs Russia exchange so fingers crossed level heads prevail.

The UK should keep a low profile as we seem to have no-one with the clout to influence things. The Russian Foreign Minister called Truss 'deaf' and 'unprepared'. At least she got to wear her (fake) fur coat.

She was humiliated. Ivanov asked her if she recognised two Russian provinces in the middle of Russia as Russian & she went full Thatcher saying "never". She was laughed out of town.

I think that says more about the Russians than Liz Truss.
In what way? The UK Ambassador had to step in to explain that the areas they were discussing actually are Russian.

You might support the Conservative Party and no problem with that but try not to be blind to their faults.

Rostov and Voronezh Oblasts are 2 regions bordering Eastern Ukraine where many of the Russian troops are stationed. Not really random “middle of Russia”.

She should have been briefed on this or at least hold her trap till she found out. By bumbling out an uninformed response as she did was amateurish in the extreme.

She, along with a lot of other senior party officials are hopelessly out of their depth. Truss didnt need to be the brightest spark in the room, she just needed to be well researched and prepared and she seemingly couldn't be bothered with that. This is a high stakes game of poker, where getting it wrong could have large social and economical impacts to a lot of people, including the risk of war spilling out of control.

Russia, along with other things want to be respected by the West and want to be seen as equals to the large global powers, globally and in Europe and sending this idiot to meet one of their top diplomats was a dangerous and ill thought out move that could only pour fuel onto the fire. It shows the gross negligence at the top of the conservative party, people not fit for posts and leadership not fit to govern. I know times have changed but could you imagine brown or Blair sending someone like Truss to defuse the situation, it simply wouldn't happen.

The UK is a mess as things stand and the sooner these chancers are gone the better.

This, it is basic due diligence, which was bound to crop up. Truss is useless.

no, they've been invaded by Germany twice in the last 100 years - and on both of those occasions Russia was on our side

Its basically like being asked about Texas & New Mexico when trying to take a tough stance on USA maybe invading Mexico.

Utterly clueless & I think v damaging for the UK. Imagine the reception here if Russia said they didn't recognise Kent & East Sussex as British...

We now have 2 not fit for purpose people leading govt. Pretendy Churchill in the top seat & pretendy Thatcher doing the international rounds making a tit out of herself. Dangerous.

Truss was never going to succeed in Russia when it has deployed half of its armed forces on the border with Ukraine and in Belarus. Obviously ok for the Russians to move their forces into a country that borders NATO but they don't like us doing the same. I'm not supporter of the Tories or Truss but all she could achieve in Russia was to let them know for sure where we stand. That we have the right to defend our Allies who are part of a military alliance, that we respect the right for sovereign states to decide on their own future, and that we will enforce sanctions.

Putin has even rattled his nuclear arsenal. He is an opportunist and saw the opportunity to make a move when the Americans pulled out of Afghanistan and who are distracted by events in Taiwan and the South China Sea. It's ok for Russians to hold naval drills off the coast of Ireland and combined naval operations with China off the coast of Japan. He can not be trusted.

Much like Johnson & cronies, he doesn't do complexity. Preferring instead soundbites & three word slogans.
