Could we lose a generation of supporters to the Mags?

Yes this is huge problem now. Reading the mags thread and some of our lot were taking the piss out of the Trippier signing (a world class player). I genuinely think that some people don’t realise how far apart the two clubs are now and how far they are about to grow. It’s frightening.

What is even worse for me is that my mag associates have stopped taking the piss. It's like we are a not even worthy of that anymore. They are starting to look at us like a Hartlepool Utd, or Carlisle Utd (No disrespect to either of those two clubs, or their fans btw).

Depends if they want to have the match day experience of live football. Kids wont be able to afford or be able to get in to the mags as they'll be selling out if they push on.

Not that it will bother the Sky/FIFA generation though as they'll just watch it on the telly.

SAFC would need to push the live football experience to make it attractive to the younger element, will be a hard sell though I imagine.
Agree with this...

After leaving the NE Barnet became my local team and wanting to watch live football it wasn't in conflict with remaining a Sunderland supporter so started going for a giggle.

Very quickly the match day experience at Barnet made my support feel more part of the club and therefore contributing to the teams success rather than just a consumer and financier of its product.

I suspect such non conflict and close knit club communities may turn quite a few to teams like South Shields rather than Newcastle to reignite their love for the experience of live football.

The club already lost a couple of thousand in the summer and must be running at something like a 5% loss of fans every year.
After the debacle of this season and the past ten days, I would say its likely the acceleration will at least double to 10% yearly.

We've lost around 10k fans since the PL days but tbh the majority of them wouldn have been as much fans of the Premier League as they were Sunderland. We've pretty much levelled out these past few years at 28-30k. I'd expect a drop off in the summer but even with the Mags hoovering up most of the next generation of support in the Region over the next Decade I still could never see our home gates regularly dipping to below 20k.
As daft and simple as it sounds I think the idea of adopting the away strip in the county Durham colours each year would be massive

Instead of daft gimmicks I'd much rather they just concentrated on putting out a team that the Sunderland fans can be proud of. Surely that's not too much to ask!

Only if their fathas are as weak as piss.. otherwise they’ll grit their teeth, crack on and end up as miserable as fuck like the rest of us.. not many people switch sides and go to the games, most turncoats are clueless, bandwagon jumping gobshites that buy shirts and go shopping when their ‘team’ is at home.. the Metro Centre have ran a daycare centre for them since 1992.

It was 30-32k average in our first couple of seasons in league one and so 28-30k is a dip.
Of course, given the chaos this season I think its set to dip again and my guess would be 23-28k next season in league one.

I reckon the worst will happen. It'll not just be Mags from Durham etc taking the piss though but you'll get people from all over the country supporting them if they start doing well. Imagine being in say Preston wearing a Sunderland top and some no mark plastic Mag bellends start taking the piss out of you.
That’s why the good lord invented violent threats!

Hmm I hesitate to ask but what will you do when we play Barnet in a couple of seasons 😂

I remember going to the game where they played Torquay and the loser went out the league. Lived in Balham at the time and shared a house with 5 mates from uni. we were watching soccer AM and they said on the telly it wasn’t all ticket game so we all just decided to go. Barnet end was full when we arrived so we could only get in the Torquay end which worked out well as Torquay won. Torquay till half five chant belting out Pitch invasion at the end great day out 😆 that Helen Chamberlain bint was stood just behind us and beat us on the pitch! Anyway seemed a different world of football back then - frightening how close we actually are to it now 🙈 did Barnet ever get back in the league since then by the way? Would have been 2001 ish

You will likely jump ship yourself.

100% this will be the case. Couldn't make it up, those c***s with so much to look forward to and we're a shambles of a League one club. The reality is most of us will never see us beat them again

The mags weren't a particularly well supported club until the Keegan era, but of course with the success they had in the league (albeit without winning anything), there stock rose.
The longer we are in this league, then the same will happen again, especially with the Saudi's hoying money at it.

Historically they've always been a well supported club tbf. Top 5 or 6 in the all time attendance table.

We might never play them again.
