Could we lose a generation of supporters to the Mags?

The next 5 years will be a huge period of transformation for both clubs.

As things stand:

1) Newcastle are a club that appear to be on the rise. If they manage to stay up this season (which is now looking likely) they will be a spent force, throwing endless amounts of money at the hope of silverware. They will sadly become a big player in English football if the barbaric Saudis have their way. I can't see how this plays out badly for them; they have an endless pot of cash.

2) Sunderland are a club on the decline. We are breaking new records for all the wrong reasons, and reaching new 'lows' as the weeks go by. It looks like we will spend another season in the third tier, with most of our better players surely departing for pastures of new. Right now we find ourselves in a pretty precarious situation, and I don't see where it ends. The worst could be yet to come!

The sad and disconcerting point to consider is this - over the next 5 years or so do we risk losing a generation of younger fans to the Mags? Unfortunately I would say this is a real possibility.
Great post and yes, I think it's very likely. With a wave of apathy poised unless there is a serious rescue of our season, this could be the last time we see big crowds and gradually erode attendance to less than 20k. In time, the kids are going to be looking up the road and seeing all the stars playing PL football, whilst we plod on in League One. Really big moment for the club right now.
I never get this? Surely if your parents are Sunderland fans then you will be?
Not in my house - we do live in Whitley Bay mind and my lad has no allegiance to SAFC other than me - all his mates support NUFC and I wouldn't try to force him to support us.

The club already lost a couple of thousand in the summer and must be running at something like a 5% loss of fans every year.
After the debacle of this season and the past ten days, I would say its likely the acceleration will at least double to 10% yearly.

Possibly, I'm already saddened to see how many kids I see in Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea shirts
Seen a couple of kids last Saturday heading to the game wearing other teams gear. One young lad in a Sunderland shirt but a Chelsea hat. Another wearing a top with a Man City logo. Only noticed because of how odd it was to someone of my age. I’m from a generation where there’s no changing the team you first support. For better or worse you’re stuck with it. I’ve a couple of nephews who all supported Man U because that’s their da’s team. One of them however “flipped” a couple of years ago and now supports Man City. Is it just how things are with the PlayStation FIFA generation maybe? Still support their local club but less “brand loyalty” than previous generations and see nowt wrong with lending their attention, if not support to whatever’s the current big thing? If any of my drivel has even an ounce of sense or truth then aye, if them lot up the road push on them it’ll not only be a generation we’ll lose. It’ll be the one after that and beyond. Depressing just thinking about it ffs

Depends if they want to have the match day experience of live football. Kids wont be able to afford or be able to get in to the mags as they'll be selling out if they push on.

Not that it will bother the Sky/FIFA generation though as they'll just watch it on the telly.

SAFC would need to push the live football experience to make it attractive to the younger element, will be a hard sell though I imagine.

As a Gateshead lad born and bred having supported us since 3rd April 1971 i can categorically say that its virtually impossible for a fan of any club to switch allegiance. If you have/did you were never a true fan.
I don't frequent the sol anymore and with the impending news that RK won't be joining that will continue however one could never switch rivalry once its I'm your blood.

Absolutely.

Any Sunderland fan that has a bairn and that bairn doesn't support Sunderland then they have failed as a Father

My two Swindon through and through.
No choice, agree with you.

Yes they question why but as explained to them they wouldn’t come anywhere close to the heart of any other football club.
TIL we die mate.⚽

As daft and simple as it sounds I think the idea of adopting the away strip in the county Durham colours each year would be massive
Totally agree. 'Place' should mean something in a person or an institution and county colours are a strong way to show this. I'd like to see NUFC follow suit, if only for the gravystained meltdown when they adopt Northumberland's red and yellow.

I live in Newcastle and it’s really tough to keep my 7 year old on the straight and narrow. He is showing real interest and comes t9 the matches, but all his mates are Newcastle fans and they are cock a hoop at the moment.
unfortunately catching the bug for the love of football comes a long time before you awaken to real world geo-politics

I have always been an optimist but I cannot see us getting promoted this season. What does that mean? I think a huge swathe of Sunderland fans will drop away from going to the matches as we are firmly a third division club with little to no ambition.

We have accepted our position and this, in conjunction with a challenging economy, will see people choose other things to do with their money. The football bubble will burst.

The club is clearly on a trajectory of decline, whilst the neighbours will be purchasing star players from around the globe. In this modern, throwaway world, it is only natural that the younger generations will want to go to that awful place and follow the tribe.

We are truly fucked and these twats will sweep up the assets of the business.

We have failed at every level.

I am so appalled at this as a lifelong Sunderland fan.

No matter who comes in now, it’s imperative we show these incompetent set of bastards running our club especially the Squeaker that we have enough of this incompetent philosophy strategist crap of his. They have all continually lied to us for years with false views promises whilst stripping the club and indeed robbing it, why are we putting up with this it’s our f***ing club make them aware at the next home gain
