Gooch is awful

Typical message board horseshit. He plays well, you claim it's a fluke, he plays poorly, you and your ilk call for his head. And yet, every manager here since he's been here seems to rate him. Coleman sent him to the reserves for a while and still praised how Gooch used it to become a better player. As noted, there isn't a manager in our current division who wouldn't be happy to have him. But the bitchathon on here continues.

He loves the city, loves the club, busts a gut every week, isn't afraid to take people on, and puts chances on a plate for our strikers more weeks than not. He's also played 8 positions since he's been here. Yeah, his defensive positioning is dodgy sometimes, and he dribbles into blind alleys, although less lately than the past. Even against Arsenal, he's out of position at left back and struggling against Pepe, and you could question him ... until you saw how much worse Denver Hume was there.

He's nearing 200 league appearances with the club. He is a far better player than the kid who got thrown into the Prem by Moyes, although sure, he'll never be a Premier League guy, which is clear now. It really is high time the vendetta stopped. If he's bad on the day, fine, say so. But cut the "get rid", "never want to see him again," "waste of a shirt" nonsense. It's pathetic.

Great Post - well said.

He frustrates the Hell out of me because I know he could be so much better but everything you say here is true.
Which is why he is still playing for Sunderland in league 1. Confident he could still perform in Championship but he is a very good player at this level, every other club would take him without hesitation. His inconsistency is frustrating but have we had a consistent performer over the 3/4 seasons we have spent down here? The grief he gets is embarrassing. It happened with Honeyman and now Gooch. Great servant, busts a gut each week.

Never understand the abuse certain players get on here. I am sure they don’t get that during a game as it is so counter productive and shatters confidence with so many.
Sure players like Rodwell downing tools you kind of understand that.

Used to get on really well with Michael Smith (Lad now established at Rotherham - Wallsend Mag :)...)
Was openly telling me once about how the crowd being on his back effected his game. He said that he became far more rigid with balls bouncing off his shins etc. Once he relaxed was a much improved player.
Often gets lost that these are very young lads and they can struggle mentally.

Never boo and I shout and scream for everything, always support every player wearing the Swindon shirt.
Even when we are 5-0 v Citeh I will keep going to the end, shouting and supporting encouragement.

It’s a forum for opinions and more importantly all about the support during the games.

Summed up perfectly in that comment “He frustrates the hell out of me because I know he could do so much better.”
That is really it at this level, the consistency of players.
2 games a decent 8/10 then a below par 6/10. I guess you have to accept if they were better they would be playing in the Championship or higher.

To me now all about the desire and commitment.
Remember the lad Adebeyo we had up front, he would try all sorts and get pelters. Many Swindon fans would laugh and think he was shite. I could see a player in there. Dropped to Walsall and now an established Championship player at Luton.
You know what, this is the thing I think some people fail to grasp. These people are human beings, not robots, and will have life struggles like most of us - problems or sickness at home, low mood, low confidence, distractions of any kind. Getting on a player’s back is never productive. Thankfully, the abuse Gooch is getting on here isn’t replicated at matches too much other than the odd moan when something doesn’t come off. I’ve seen first-hand how shouting abuse leads to the kind of things Michael Smith spoke about. It benefits nobody

Couldn't agree more. I'm not knocking the lad, just wish he would fulfil his potential. His biggest flaw IMO is knowing when to release the ball and that can surely be coached. It seems to me that there's something wrong that this hasn't been addressed already. Can't fault him for effort though.

Its all about opinions mate nowt else.
Whether everyone or anyone else agrees it don't matter
As above can't fault his effort at the min losing 10lbs has helped a lot

Spot on mate.
Very lucky to have got to know players at Swindon over the years, all age groups. Without doubt those in their 30’s have better coping mechanisms, expected.
Some of the abuse they receive is wrong on all accounts. Like you quite rightly put, the spotlight is 90 minutes and no idea as to what is also going on in their own life.
I know a few players that have physically thrown up before a game due to nerves etc. Indeed they are not robots.
Equally these players are represented by parents at the games. Currently friends with two sets of parents of existing players, the Mums particularly get hurt by it. They do also understand the commitment and passion from the fans. It’s a delicate and sensitive topic for sure.

Tremendous post.

he always performs best when it appears that he has been given specific instructions on how to play. he seems to get caught in the headlights when he suddenly finds himself with a decision that he has to make on his own. driving forward from deep in the wing back role has suited him quite well because it means he usually has options in front of him, or someone has pulled out wide to take the ball off him.

when his whole game instruction is get to the byline and cross it to the near-post, he's manages to do it more often than he doesn't. that in its own right is a pretty decent asset to have, in terms of getting territory. we just need to make sure someone is competing for the ball at the near post. its much the same as dejaku pretty much beating his man at will and sauntering forward. if we're making sure we're getting bodies forward to give those players more than just stewart as an option, then we will make teams struggle.

took us a long time to fully realise the strength we had in mcgeady for rendering 2 of the opposition players passengers. spent so long not getting forward once he had the ball, allowing our CF to be doubled up on and yet he still managed to score a shit load despite being one of the most static and technically inept footballers we've had. we have some effective wingers that can be somewhat one trick ponies, but take advantage of that one trick as a team and we're stronger for it.
