Bowling lanes/machines

Faced a 95mph ball once on the machine at CLS. I saw it but there was never a hope of getting bat on it

@Ceverton sent one down at me at 90 i said aim it well outside off

the fucker swang in like wasim akram had chucked it down smashed off my pad and sent the stumps smashing off the wall
Booked in on Saturday afternoon with a bowling machine.

Anyone know if you have to provide your own balls? Didn't ask and didn't want to turn up with none  I have a handful somewhere like but they're shite slazanger ones

the bowling machine will have balls

Just burst out laughing, it was hilarious . I remember that like it was yesterday, you jumped backwards, hit your pads and splattered the stumps a good few yards back

The balls you use on a machine a different to normal cricket balls, so it’d be worth ringing up and finding out.

They hurt like fuck if you don’t have thigh pads on in my experience, especially if you get several in the same area.

Ideally you want someone feeding it that knows what they’re doing, and film it to get the most out of it.

My advice would be start off about 50 mph and build up gradually as you get your feet moving and your timing improves.

We’ve been netting on a weekend and I used ours Saturday just gone for 10 minutes and didn’t go above 60mph. Forward defensive for 5 minutes then more attacking shots.

After 10 minutes swapped into the live bowling lane and hit the ball the best I’ve done for ages. If used properly the machine is great.

Thanks for the heads up

Have thigh pad in my batting shorts but the person feeding the machine will have absolutely zero idea

Will start slow regardless. Something I struggled with when I was playing regularly was getting feet movement right after a month or two out. Imagine it'll take a while to adapt

Fully expecting to be bruised. Never something that's bothered me

Me neither but getting a bit older & things start to hurt more

Feeding it is an important job, only need little changes in direction up/down/left/right to make a noticeable difference at the strikers end. Don’t worry about starting slow, I always think it’s a lot faster than the speed s, hard floor and a skiddy ball means 60mph on the machine is probably closer to 70mph+ outside in the middle.

Enjoy 👍

its actually ridiculous … thought of that speed banged in unreal reaction speed needed
You also don't get the visual trigger of the bowlers arm coming over at the point of release - the machine just spits the ball out at whatever pace and length it's set to.

They're great for sharpening up your reactions but I found them to be no substitute for facing 'real' bowlers.

I’ve faced one on 95. I saw the ball get fed in and heard it come out. Did I fuck see it though. The noise it made off the back wall at the riverside was loud though

My issue with club nets is you face bowlers who aren’t that good. I’ll hold my hand up here and say I’m exactly one of those(always been a batter) You need proper bowlers bowling at you otherwise it’s a waste of time.
In that respect a bowling machine is good to work on certain things. Keep getting out to Yorkers? Then set the machine on a Yorker length until you can keep them out. Same for grooving certain shot types etc.

If the feeder is clued up they’ll go through exactly the same routine with every ball …. hold it aloft for two seconds, then drop it in.

This consistent way of feeding the ball will be repeatable - like a bowler on his run up

I get what you're saying but I could never get it to work for me on the odd occasion I used one.

I used to try to 'attune' my trigger movements to the bowler running in and going through his action and found that with a bowling machine that rhythm just wasn't there. Probably explains why I was shite at playing spin or against bowlers with short run-ups.

I'd enjoy going and practicing some defending, especially against spin. Very relaxing I imagine, facing the repetition of ball after ball of varied off spin.

I understand, but if you reduce the speed on the bowling machine, then your trigger will almost become redundant.

The whole idea of a bowling machine, from a coaching perspective is to repeat the delivery consistently, so the batter can perfect a shot. It doesn't need to be too fast in the initial stages.

I don't think you need an early trigger against a spinner. It should be as the delivery comes out
