Was pretty obvious Omnicron was already here in the UK. It's been in circulation for 3 weeks now. I wouldn't be surprised if it was already global.
I'm not sure the need of a press conference about it however, there's too little data on it to suggest it can be anymore harmful right now albeit the indications are very bad.

Most PCR assays will have no issue.
Antigen tests (lateral flow) not so simple because of the significant number of spike protein mutations. Possible some of the shitty ones will struggle. We'll find out soon enough.

Because there are 32 manipulations to the virus, which people fear could identity as a totally different virus to the immune system therefore easily bypass it and make vaccines useless.
There's absolutely no data on it which is why Governments everywhere are panicking about it, the only thing known about it is that it's still detectable on PCR tests. Facemasks have been made mandatory again as of just now in England they're that worried about it - It could easily be a false alarm, but as said before the indications are looking very grim.

Depends how you define ‘very bad’.
More transmissible doesn’t mean the symptoms are bad. From what I’d read there was no evidence of this variant causing any worse symptoms than what we already have.
And every scientist I’ve read has said the vaccine is likely to provide protection against serious illness.
It’s still far too early to tell either way.
