Boycott Qatar

2022 World Cup Sponsors

  1. Budweiser
  2. Hisense
  3. Mc Donalds
  4. Vivo

FIFA Sponsors

  1. Adidas
  2. Coca-Cola
  3. Wanda Group
  4. Hyundai
  5. Qatar Airways
  6. Visa
If you want to boycott the sponsors, here's a list. Personally I could do without McDonalds for a month and I am a mastercard user, but I will watch it as I've already paid for my TV Licence.
I'm doing well with that list. Hate Budweiser and McDonalds. Don't think I have had either in over two decades. Dunno what Vivo and Hisense are.

Just bought new football boots and went for Nike over Adidas. Do occasionally drink coke but probably been over a year since I bought anyway. Don't know who Wanda are, highly unlikely to buy a Hyundai, not going to fly anywhere, certainly not with Qatar and have a master card.

Am genuinely unsure of what to do.

I have always enjoyed watching the World Cup even when England haven't qualified (USA 1994 I'm looking at you) it brings back alot of fond childhood memories of Panini albums being able to stay up late etc etc.

However the fact that everyone knew what was going to happen when Qatar entered the race for the WC and with their atrocious human rights record (I think we will never find out the true number of deaths linked with this WC) and the blatant throw money at it and the problem disappears attitude shown by all involved in the process means morally I know I shouldn't.

I would love to say I will boycott it unfortunately I think I may end up watching the England games (and not be overly proud of myself for doing so)

Be interested to see who in here planning to boycott the World Cup in Qatar was posting about the Russian one. That is Russia who had, just three months before the tournament, literally deployed chemical weapons against citizens of this country. If anyone deserved a boycott, at least from English football fans, it was them. And yet...

I will be watching, as I always do. Do I feel good about that? Not really. However, I do not fundamentally think that it is fair on ordinary football fans for them to carry the moral burden of Fifa's corruption and Qatar's evil on labour standards and human rights. It's a disgrace and I applaud those who are taking a tougher stance. But it's not really fair on fans who love World Cups - that's actually a large part of the insidious disgrace here. Same with the Olympics. People know sport can sportswash, because sport is beautiful and its not fair on fans (this argument doesn't let our friends down the road off the hook mind, because they have actively leaned into it and celebrated something that should have had them a lot more conflicted).

I think a boycott of sponsors is probably the more effective course of action as that's what Fifa really measure. If they made money and fans didn't watch, they wouldn't give a flying fuck. A few protests from the players would be brilliant as well - much better than a boycott. In terms of meaningful power over sports regulation? That's for states not people. Hard really, given how many states have a vested interest in continuing the sports-washing. Not sure we're hugely above that ourselves tbh.

But yes, I'll be watching it. Sorry about that. Genuinely, am a bit. What can you do?

The knee debate has fuck all to do with this btw - just classic whataboutery from people who want to shift the focus away from racial injustice. You can walk and chew gum at the same time, lads.

I spent nearly 8yrs there, I have no intention of going back to watch the games but will watch from the comfort of my own home with a beer!

You were literally trying to take the moral high ground for saying you're not watching the world cup, ridiculous
No I wasn't, go and read them again. You're 'presuming' that I'm taking the moral high ground, the fact of the matter is that I personally don't care if you watch it or not so there's your 'moral high ground' knock yourself out and watch every game, I couldn't give a monkeys BUT i won't be watching, which is where your issues seem to be. It's bizarre behaviour

Fair play, that was kind of what I was getting at with the original post until @robbied1 started acting all strange and butt hurt for no apparent reason. It's the exact quandary I've had, the World Cup has always been a class event (apart from Brazil in 2014 which stunk the place out) but the deaths involved more than anything have persuaded me that enough is enough. It's a personal choice

No butt hurt here, I just find it a bit ridiculous that grown men have to post that they are boycotting the world cup, like they need a pat on the back for dsaying so, for me that should be something you do instead of needing gratification for doing so.
Though I doubt many of the people who say this actually will.
I think it was a fair presumption to make in regards to post #92.

Go back, read it again and get your head out of your arse.

does everyone not watching not bother with gas ovens and central heating too? you're supporting Qatar far more that way

Excellent post, though I disagree somewhat with your point about taking the knee. I think it’s entirely relevant to point out the hypocrisy of spending a few seconds taking the knee, which costs footballers SFA, while being prepared to play in countries run by murderous, barbaric regimes.

It‘s easy to take the knee in front of the cameras and show the world how righteous you are, even if you’re not. However, it’s a massive sacrifice to boycott a tournament and miss out on the chance of a lifetime.
It‘ll be interesting to see which players are genuinely concerned about the terrible injustices in the world, and which players are just virtue signalling. I’ll wager not one of them will be brave and selfless enough to make the sacrifice.

I posted that I'm not watching it because the thread title says 'Are you boycotting it' ... again you're jumping to conclusions about people.

Not really, this is to do with FIFA and Qatar behaviour around the world cup. Those 6500 haven't died so that i can heat my beans on the hob have they?

This is what I was getting at with the original post, not judging anyone for their choices, just gauging the various opinions on the subject. I have a couple of friends who won't watch a ball being kicked, I have a couple of friends who will be heading there in person. I am in the camp of the former and it's not an easy conclusion to come to

I take it Qatar is fine but Saudi Arabia isn’t ??
I don't!

Qatar has failed to explain up to 70% of migrant worker deaths in the past 10 years according to Amnesty.

More than from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar since it won the right to host the World Cup 10 years ago, The Guardian tells us.

So Qatar is anything BUT fine to me.

As for the Saudis, I have worked there very frequently over several decades. Because of my experiences there I will NEVER return there. Nor will I watch the Cup matches.
