Themselves, I reckon. Deep down, they have to know they're on the wrong moral side of the argument, but their pride won't let them admit it. So they thrash around for any manner of "justification" to make themselves feel better about it.

On the other hand, to quote a classic Red Molotov t-shirt - "No amount of evidence will convince an idiot".
