Gay premier league footballer

Without wanting to turn this into a mag bashing thread, I really do think the PL have fucked up for things like this. If gay players really were thinking about coming out, it would likely be happening now because of all the support in place. The PL, however, have now proved that all the talk of inclusivity, all the support for rainbow laces, is just a corporate exercise in being seen to do the right thing. Their actions, allowing homophobic owners into the league, shows where their priorities and morals really lie. Look at that journalist (who wasn't even the one who asked Howe the question), immediately an inbox full of homophobic messages from Saudi trolls. They've opened that Pandoras box and let these people into the game. Any player coming out now will have to contend with the fact that not only do these trolls exist, they've been emboldened and welcomed into the fold.

Be class seeing the footballer kissing his excellency’s hand

Be like something off little Britain with him being sick everywhere

Because otherwise the press/social media will announce it for them, and they will be currently hiding the fact, not going out in public with their partner for example.
Fair point
Why should people live their life in secret? Why should they have to live their life hiding what they are?
Wasn't suggesting they should hide anything mate, just live their lives as they want to.

It'll be the same as when it happened in boxing a few years ago. The media will try and make it into something big and then 95% of people will say good for him, shrug their shoulders and move on cause who cares what someone's sexual orientation is in 2021.

But then you'll have the other 5% and I'm prob being generous to them with hat number who will talk shit on Twitter and those pricks can get fucked.

It's actually quite surprising that there hasn't been a player in the Premier League come out yet tbh, must have been a few gay players over the years.

Unfortunately if they were to get in that proximity it's be more likely because he was gonna get executed soon. Vile country.

If their sexuality is irrelevant to how they perform as a footballer, and of course it is,why announce it at all ?
I guess fundamentally because there's a latent default assumption that all people are heterosexual. Setting the record straight on your terms probably allows you a lot more freedom to live your life openly without rumour, speculation and negative energy, and with acceptance.

Let's face it, footballers are celebrities so it affecting or not affecting their game is only one part of this picture.

It’d be great if you are a 14/15 year old lad struggling to understand your sexuality/suffering abuse from other lads your age, to see a hugely successful footballer in a position of power come out. Might also make bullies think twice about giving them shit.

while it is not newsworthy in itself, the presentation of the story as a positive, forward thinking development that further proves this is acceptable in society, is very significant
Good points mate, not sure it would deter the bullies though. I guess we can all play our part and shout down any of these people but that can be a bit risky !

Fully understood,i just wonder how their matchday experience will be affected. As we know, there are some Neanderthals out there !

Good, although don't see why someone else has to announce they will.

Edit: Seems like she's predicting someone will rather than stating someone in particular will.

The most simple answer is so that these players can lead a normal life.
Can you imagine spending your entire working life hidden away? If you're away on international duty and everybody else's WAG's are being pictured in the stands and your partner is not allowed to join them, for fear of scandal?
If you can't go out in public with your other half, for fear of being "papped"? It really can't be easy.

Let them get it out in the open and then let them live a normal life. I think that's massively important.

I’d like to think the vast majority of supporters reaction will be something along the lines of, “really? Him? Wouldn’t have guessed that!” Then we all get on with our lives. And the only grief they get on a match day is due to then misplacing a pass or having a shit game.
I wonder how much women’s football can take credit in making it easier to come out as gay in the modern game?

And see their pictures in the papers every week speculating when they’re seen out with their partner?

It’s a cycle, if you’re desperate to know who is gay, the papers will print it, if no one gives a shit they won’t print it. Also, media speculation is never ending, even if every gay footballer came out they still find people to speculate about.

Shagging arse or minge is not an identity, it is a private matter, the public doesn’t need to know.

So what happens when an interviewer inevitably asks the question?
