Will be widely accepted in a positive way. Which I doubt would have been the case even 5 years ago, nevermind 10. The response on threads like this is proof of that, no one cares that someone is gay anymore (bar the 0.5% of idiots that will always exist)

it shows that as societies we can evolve, and that campaigns/festivals/education like pride, rainbow laces etc can help smash through barriers

With everything else going on around the world I'd like to think the vast majority of folk wouldn't even bat an eyelid.

If it was one of ours they wouldn't get any less support from me.

The more reasonable among us wouldn't care but there is a reason why being gay is more open in wider society, although I'd imagine a lot of people still keep it quiet, but remains private in football. Football crowds can be a mob for vindictive and spiteful people to hide in and vent their frustrations at anyone providing they can get away with it: footballers, referees, opposing fans. Aye, you'd have a good chunk of a crowd who would see any bullying by the crowd as being beyond the pale but there is also a good chunk who would enjoy abusing a player for being gay. If you're a player and you operate in a world where 'footballers aren't gay', you'd probably have enough on your plate without risking a mob screaming at you also.

I don't think society has come as far as we like to think. There are large sections of people who hold racist, homophobic, whatever else views and the only reason they don't air them in public is because it is not the done thing these days. A football crowd, however, where anything goes and you can largely get away with it when in a big group; that's a different matter. It probably would settle down after a while as the mob would get bored of those targets and look for another target, but I can't see any footballer coming out as gay in this country escaping abuse in the short to medium term.

It's also the other side . The amount of publicity that they would get not only from UK but aroubd the world . It would be incredibly intrusive even if in a positive way. Some people just want to get on with life

Exactly, when that Australian lad came out it was a bit like that Partridge shrug of shoulders meme.
Could not care less for the sexual orientation of any player.

The media making a big deal of it must make it harder for them.

……. Coming out next year

Main headline on sky news, surely that’s not the most important breaking news story in the world today? Is this even something important? These days I don’t get why this is even a big thing anymore.
Unfortunately the way some fans are s player does come out as gay then he would be absolutely tortured by sections of the fans on a weekly basis. He will suffer at the hands of these idiots who belong to every club unfortunately. It’s not as simple as it would seem. Yes it’s 2021 and we as a species should be over this by now but some fans won’t ever get it. NUFC and the premier league rulers have shown that it’s fine to have owners in this support who have a reveme that makes it illegal to be gay in their country o why would a player want to come out especially now. Very sad but I’m afraid it’s the way it is.
Whilst i acknowledge these lads bravery in considering doing this (and it should just be accepted anyway) is it wrong that i hope they're Newcastle players?
I’ve thought the same but at the end of the day the feelings and the abuse this player will get I wouldn’t wish it on anyone regardless of who they play for.

I feel like this is a yearly cycle story where we find out there are gay footballers yet to come out and then they never do.

Goes without saying it would be a bold step for the player(s) who do and you’d like to think they are welcomed by most fans. There will be online Twitteruser86962946977s who will throw horrendous comments but you’d like to think that society has now made way for moments like this. Hope it happens.

Despite all the work that has been done regarding females and football, I was disappointed to hear a chorus of "get your tits out for the lads" directed at a female steward on Tuesday night.

There's still a lot of awareness needed to educate some football fans on what isn't acceptable to sing about.

It wouldn't take 2 matches for the opposing fans to start homophobic chants. No footballer wants to be a first mover on top tier football. There will be personal abuse, no doubt.

And it might be even worse from the club's own fans on social media if things don't go their way. Look at the insulting LJ has been getting lately, because people are fishing for laughs and likes.

The fact the media are portraying this story as gay premier league footballer says it all really. The fact he is a premier league player is the big story as far as the TV companies are concerned. Sad events.

It would send the Saudi bots into hyperdrive but does anyone really care in real life. I can't imagine there would be wide spread homophobic chanting. There isn't racist chanting. It's mainly twitter bellends.
