if you are going to do that, where do you stop? May as well start saying everywhere north of Middlesbrough is Newcastle

True, I guess I was thinking of areas of countryside between places being a clear boundary. When we came up for our 5-0 battering there was a definite amount of countryside between Middlesbrough and Sunderland on the A19. I assume a similar difference between Sunderland and Tyneside.

Excuse my southern ignorance but is not fair to say that Tynemouth (and Gateshead) are all the Newcastle built up area?

In London, Wembley stadium is 30 miles and an hour away from the Millennium Dome, but both are ‘sights’ in the same city.

No one argues that the Boroughs of Lambeth and Westminster (opposite sides of the river) are different cities/town and that the London Eye and Big Ben are in different places.

Obviously just an outside observer view so I don’t know the history of the geography up there but most people down here associate both sides of the Tyne Bridge as Newcastle even though they are different local councils (like Lambeth and Westminster are). If it is more complicated like that then sorry for not knowing.
Once upon a time, there were 2 counties in the north east of England. Northumberland and County Durham. Anything north of the Tyne was Northumberland and South was County Durham.

In the 1970’s, Sunderland, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Newcastle and North Tyneside were all brought together under the county “Tyne and Wear”.

I’d get into how Sunderland tax payers money has helped pay for the regeneration of Newcastle City Centre and the metro system, which finally came to Sunderland in 2002, however I’ll leave that for another day.

But to answer your question, not everything in the north east is Newcastle, in fact not much of the north east is Newcastle.

There’s no way he’s not got the job. He was sat at the match. That’s pretty much it confirmed. Has it ever happened where they then don’t take the job? Bet there’s an obvious one
I'm sure it has happened. Just can't remember who

Clough parading Ian Storey Moore around the pitch at Derby only for him to subsequently sign for Manure

Depends where you...if you drove from Sunderland into Shields there would be a fleeting bit of Greenbelt where the Academy is then if you went along the river you would go from industrial area to another in jarrow, hebburn, pelaw, felling and gateshead with very little greenbelt.

On your Gateshead point - Gateshead historically has had it's own identity and in the 70's/80's had some heavyweight employers like Rolls Riyce, NEI, Parsons (older posters can add more detail). It also has the athletics stadium.

In my mind the Morphing of the two (Gateshead in Newcastle) into NewcatleGateshead started with the opening of the Hilton NewcastleGateshead and the joint bid for Capital of Culture in 2008 but in mind they are two separate places. The closest similarity I can think of is Liverpool/Birkenhead. Birkenhead had a glorious shipbuilding history and at one point was very wealthy but time has not been kind on it but you will find few people saying they are from Liverpool who live in Birkenhead. Whilst many Birkenheaders will be blue or red a large proportion will be Tranmere.

Whilst I am on I also object to Newcastle's claim of owning the label "Geordies". I am a Geordie (from South Shields) and not a Mackem and back in the mid 80's we used to sing Geordies/Mackems... John Hall took the label for himself.

p.s. I hate them.
