Gooch is awful

I don't make judgements of players based on one game.

That's just such an easy game to play.
You must be joking, he has robbed a living out of us for years, so the easy part is he has been crap for years
Which two would they be Bob? I agree Gooch hasn’t been great lately, who’s the other one.

Just FYI putting our differences a side, I’ve actually found myself agreeing with you a fair bit over the last few days. When you don’t post itk bull, a lot of what you say makes sense.
Well the other one is AOB, £6,700.00 p week for him is such a waste.

I agree on AOB too. No need for the wage comment though. See we can actually agree on things, just the itk stuff isn’t needed.

20-21 - 2nd highest assists in the squad
19-20 - Top scorer
18-19 - Top assists

Been pretty poor this season though so far bar a couple of games.

Think you're being extremely generous to him there. Over those 3 seasons he's been nowhere near consistent enough.

He's scored 18 goals in 116 appearance, a goal every 6 and a half games, I'd expect a bit more on that front tbh.

22 assists in those 116 appearances, a little under an assist every 5 games. It should be better.

I mean surely we all can see he just hasn't improved while at Sunderland? We should have looked to improve the squad beyond him, instead we persisted with him.

An assist every 5 games is very very good in any division.

Problem with Gooch is in-between his creative passes that are on the mark once or twice a game at most, he's giving the ball away incredibly easily.

I'm all for criticising players but targeting individuals, with wild exaggerations, is poor crack imo.

Every manager we've had has kept Gooch and played him so he obviously can't be crap. He has the right attitude which some others, like Jones/Maguire/etc obviously haven't and has the basic talent on the pitch.

What's missing is the right coaching imo.

He currently seems low on confidence and probably doesn't feel appreciated by the supporters. But he works hard, can shoot well with both feet and links up well when he's on his game. People say he doesn't get his head up but, I've noticed, when he has the ball out wide he's often not given options, alongside or in the box, so has to just keep going. If he loses the ball he's accused of being greedy and not seeing the big picture. McGeady has the same criticism thrown at him. Embleton, Neil and O'Nien are supposed to be a dynamic midfield but are often slow to support the wide men like Gooch. If Stewart is his only option that's easily defended.

Your comment was just about worth putting on a match thread, I don't see the need for its own thread when there are worse players at the club.

Most people said Burge was the cause of all of our defensive problems and Hoffman would soon sort that out. Now it's Johnson's fault for not playing Younger according to many. Is Hoffman to blame for us shipping goals or is it actually our defensive frailties that affect the keeper?

Hardly. I've posted facts. No more no less. Regardless of who we sign, or who we play he's been up there every season we've been down here and and wingers we've brought in haven't been able to displace him.

He is inconsistent, mind (as many wingers are) and invariably plays better when he gets the ball higher up the pitch. Playing deep and giving him the ball in his own half doesn't help him and neither did playing him at wing back.

He's been way down the list of players that need replacing with many of those players being ones that have been signed since we came down who were meant to be better than what we had.

I get where your coming from re the managers who have kept him around, but i disagree totally.
Gooch is 1 of 4 players who are not worth their shirt, inc 2 who fans think effort is better than attitude and skill.
So i think its just best we disagree.

Effort come first even if it's Ronaldo, Messi or Ross Stewart.

Skill is great but we've all seen players with loads of talent but no real effort.

Gooch has enough of both effort and skill, it just needs the right coaches to put them together.
