Interest in the FA cup started to wane back in the eighties in tandem with a massive drop in attendances throughout the game.
Strangely enough it is the poor relation of the FA cup, namely the League cup which is attracting large crowds. One off games over 90 minutes with no extra time and penalties seem to appeal.
I often wonder that as football is so mega popular nowadays the main reason fans go to cup games is to make sure they can actually watch a game.
Spurs, Liverpool and West Ham fans for example fill their grounds with season ticket holders therefore any cup game attracts great interest from those that otherwise could not attend.
With Sunderland it works the opposite.
We always have spare capacity therefore there is no incentive to attend cup games because tickets for league games are always readily available.
