Alves CDM?

Would probably work on FIFA, but he can’t even take the place of ‘first reserve’ in his desired position, never mind take the Captain’s position.

A very soft centre. Probably my biggest criticism.

I think so. O'Nien is a trier but he's not going to dominate in midfield.

The same could be said about Sanderson last year until needs must. Look how that turned out.

If O'Nien plays, he plays, further foward. He could have been sent off yesterday. Can do without his antics.

Worth swapping onien and Winchester?
Winchester much better technical footballer

I'd leave Winchester where he is TBH. Has done fairly well there. It's CM that's the bit of a problem when it gets tough. O'Nien might be OK as a right sided attacking player but that's about it IMO.

You knew what I meant. Why did you post that?
Because I don’t understand your logic in this case - I agree that Alves could replicate Sanderson and go from our 4th choice centre half, who’s on loan from a PL side, to suddenly being an unearthed gem in our starting XI - but i fail to see how the Sanderson revelation relates to Alves becoming a better Midfield option than Evans or O’Nien

Johnson said he thinks he can play CDM but is obviously hesitant to try him there. Same as he was forced into playing Sanderson at CB.

If you’d have just mentioned anywhere at all that the boss reckons he can play there then I wouldn’t have been so confused as to why you were giving the 4th choice CB a shout for midfield!

now that’s out the way. If the boss sees it then his massive frame should fix some of those soft midfield issues. His main ability is supposed to be his passing too, so that makes sense, although passing as a centre half is much simpler than the sitting midfielder!

Fair enough. The problem remains we have a soft underbelly. Time to try and sort it IMO.

Whoever plays there is going to have to be able to cope with quick balls to them, under pressure, and facing their own goal.

Charlton really pressed us there yesterday and we struggled to deal with it at times.

Luke O’Nien needs to cut out the shithousing to be fair and get on with the game, he’s mixing up getting stuck in with needless off the ball stuff that’s not of any benefit at the moment.

I think we should stick him in at centre half. Also stick Broadhead in the first 11 when he’s fit and play them both for a few games. Equally do the same with Huggins when returns from injury. These players could make a big difference if they’re given a run of games.

(I realise this is irrelevant to the thread)

Know a couple of West Ham fans who watch all their Development squad games and they can’t seem to understand why he’s not getting minutes. The expectation from them is that, like Declan Rice, Alves could make the move from a defender to being able to play in a deep lying midfield role. I’ve seen LJ comment once or twice that he thinks he could do that. Maybe worth having a look at, starting with QPR this week?
