If that PIF is primarily used to invest in companies such as Boeing to turn a profit, how are they expecting to do the same thing in the Premier League? Man City's owner paid £210 million and they're valued at nearly £3 billion now. Theire NET spend per season since 2008 is just over £650 million. Chelsea are at £3.2 billion now after being bought for £140 million. Their NET spend per season since 2003 is just over £700 million. I know the NET spend isn't to the £ but it's just to illustrate they also sell players now matter how many £100's of millions they spend. My point anyway is that both clubs owners would get a return if they sold up but they've also won a shit load of stuff to go with their investment. The huge difference now though is the Mag owners can't just throw £100's millions buying players so there's the first stumbling block.

They were £10 million behind them in revenue in 2019/20 yet they're just ticking along with Leicester are spending a shit load chasing success. Some may said COVID etc but scroll down to 2017/18 and Palace are still £10m behind. Even in 2018/19 Palace were only £25m behind Leicester. The concern being is Leicester spending in recent seasons has gone daft and it may well be that it could turn ugly if they don't get Champions League and end up mid table.

The gap in revenue at the top from the big 6 to the rest is quite a leap. That's because the chunk of money the big clubs get is from the years of global exposure and constant Champions League generating more money through sponsors/merchandising etc along with the bigger gate revenue due to stupidly high ticket prices. There is no way the Mags can do what they did in the 90's and throw money about willy nilly for numerous reasons so how can they compete regularly enough to get the huge globally image that can demand the higher sponsor/merchandise sales/ticket prices?

One big to note is there wasn't 6 big money clubs back in the 90's along with 2 other clubs with 'potential' in West Ham/Everton and you can't forget Leicester who are spending a bit beyond their previous means. So that's 9 teams to compete with now yet in the 90's the extra money levelled the playing field a bit as suddenly teams had an influx of extra revenue to spend so gate receipts weren't as important. There isn't that luxury now of the level playing field and a load of space at the top for another team.

So for me, watching the Mags dream delusion about winning the league and buying Mbappe, Haaland etc etc is going to be more enjoyable when they win fuck all while signing cast offs or greedy mercanaries looking for a payday.

Aye they may win a cup eventually but look at the teams who've done that since they last won one? It's about time they eventually won one as they're 34th on this that even includes a League Two 2 club (@Swindon On Tour). Chances are it will have been bought if they suddenly improve the squad with those cast offs on big wages. But do the Saudi's even want to go down the road of throwing £100's millions at the club to possibly climb a few places up the league from 12th? I don't think they will though they may go all out for a cup to appease the fans and I've had that impression for a while now and before the takeover even happened.

I do think they'll go down the development route and the toon army may not be happy about if they get nowt in success return. I think Staveley is paying them a lip service with all this talk of winning the league etc and fans deserve it. If they don't climb up the table and get into Europe or win a cup then it could soon turn ugly when the reality kicks in as they're not the next Chelsea or Man City ;) There's already grumbling among the mags as they haven't got rid of Bruce as they can't see why they can't just sack him and go with Jones until the find a manager. I think he'll stay for a bit yet and a few managers/players will knock them back (see waffle link below).

The short version of that post is that it's not the 90's and people need to realise that it's a far different and harder league and a shit load of money (if it's even spent on the Mags) won't mean success. I may well be pissing my knickers when the Mags realise they've been had and being the 'richest club in the world' means fuck all and they turn on the owners due to lack of success.

There's also the non football development side of things (Reuben brothers anyone?) as could they end up turning St James into flats/business ala Arsenal and redevelop land elsewhere with a new stadium being part of a larger complex? Man City have regenerated the areas but I saw this shared last week which is interesting. Only time will tell of course but I won't be surprised if the Mags get nowhere and have been used.

  • I'm quite sick of the complaints from supporters. We've won the lottery, this is just a slight downside. You have to remember that we're only a week in, things will die down as long as KSA behave
