Hes too inconsistent which is why he's with us. I agree he will move on at some point and he is class in our pretty poor team, but his decision making and poor ball retention at times will probably hold him back for playing right at the top. He's not even in the France squad.

I used the PriceofFootball's football inflation index to calculate some transfers from yesteryear into today's terms.
In today's terms that is how much the mags were spending back in 1996.

But forget individuals and think about the fee. Other random ones I normalised 100m for Grealish is 29m in 2005, 16.8m for Owen is 56m today. Both seem plausible.

Don't forget the wages they would have been on also as below Thor'd from an old post shows the highest wages at the time. I recall listing on the radio when an ex Mag player (I dunno if it was Howey) said he couldn't believe what he got offered as it was far more than he was going to accept anyway. Shearer would be on over £400,000 a week using that same Index. They were paying players good money also to get them to come up North but I'll tell you honestly, I love it, love it, when I read that last sentence

Their average player wage in the 2020 books is £52k which just shows how much Shearer given the astronomical rise in football finances over the last 25 years. Like I said, I heard the ex Mag on the radio saying what he was going to accept and what they offered him and I laughed at it. I can't remember the numbers but it just showed how the owners hoyed the new found Premier League money at winning it. Thankfully they didn't win owt and eventually the owners bailed when the money coming in got tight and they couldn't feed the monster they'd created and the '92ers were born. It's mentioned that the Halls (Sir John and Douglas) got £95 million over the years, while the Shepherds (Freddy and Bruce) made do with £55 million but the club wasn't exactly financially sound as Ashley found out.
